How to open a Moodle quiz for one student

Opening a Moodle quiz for one student usually does not require a separate quiz. In most cases you keep one quiz for the whole class and add a user override for the student who needs different timing, an extra attempt or a later close date. Overrides change only that person's settings, so everyone else keeps the original schedule.

  • Set user overrides from the quiz's administration menu for timing or attempt changes.
  • Use group overrides when several students need the same change.
  • Restrict access by group to keep a quiz away from everyone outside that group.
  • Preview the quiz as a student before the open date to confirm the override works.
Example Moodle quiz override settings
Where do you find User overrides for a Moodle quiz?In the Quiz administration menu on the quiz page, under User overrides.
What can a Moodle user override change?Open and close dates, time limit, number of attempts and password, applied to one named student without changing the quiz for others.
How do you hide a Moodle quiz from everyone except one student?Use Restrict access with a group that contains only that student, since students outside the group cannot access the quiz.
What does a group override do in Moodle? It applies the same timing or attempt changes to every member of a chosen group, so you do not repeat the change for each student.
How do you import questions into a Moodle question bank?Use the question bank's Import option, choose the Moodle XML format, and review the imported questions before adding them to a quiz.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or a photo of a page.

Generate and review

Choose multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions, then check the explanations before using them.

Import into Moodle

On Pro, export Moodle XML and import it into the question bank. Set open dates and user overrides inside Moodle.

If the quiz should be hidden from everyone except one student, use Restrict access with a group that contains only that student. DeckOwl does not change these Moodle settings. It helps with the questions, which you can generate from your own notes and import as Moodle XML on the Pro plan.

Frequently asked questions

How do I give one student extra time on a Moodle quiz?

Open the quiz, go to Quiz administration, choose User overrides, and add an override for that student with a longer time limit. The extra time applies only to that student's attempt.

How many questions should a short Moodle quiz have?

Most short checks work well with 10 to 20 questions so students can finish within the time limit. Mix recall questions with a few that ask students to apply a concept.

Can DeckOwl set up the Moodle quiz and its access settings?

No. DeckOwl generates questions from your files and can export them as Moodle XML on the Pro plan. Open dates, overrides and restrictions are set inside Moodle.

Is there a free way to try it first?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations a month and studying in the browser, and no credit card is needed to start. Exports require a paid plan.
