How numerical questions work in Moodle quizzes

Moodle's numerical question type checks a typed number against one correct value plus a tolerance, which makes it useful for maths, chemistry and dosage practice. Writing a full set of moodle quiz numerical questions by hand takes time, especially when every answer needs a worked explanation.

  • Keep units consistent between the question text and the answer
  • Set tolerance only as wide as the rounding your course allows
  • Test one imported question in a sandbox course before the real quiz
  • Write a worked explanation for each answer so students see the method
Example numerical questions for Moodle quizzes
A solution contains 25 g of salt in 500 mL of water. What is the concentration in g/L?50 g/L, because 25 g divided by 0.5 L equals 50 g/L.
Convert 3.5 hours to minutes.210 minutes, because 3.5 × 60 = 210.
A car travels 150 km in 2 hours. What is its average speed in km/h?75 km/h, because speed equals distance divided by time.
In Moodle, a numerical question has the answer 9.81 and a tolerance of 0.05. Which responses count as correct?Any value from 9.76 to 9.86 inclusive, because the tolerance applies on both sides of the answer.
What is 15% of 240?36, because 0.15 × 240 = 36.

Explanations for every answer

Each generated question includes an explanation, so you can check the reasoning behind the number before it reaches students.

Built from your own material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or a photo of a worked problem page, and questions are drawn from that content.

Moodle XML export

Moodle XML export is included on the Pro plan at $14.99/month, so finished questions can go into a Moodle question bank.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or a photo of a worked example from class.

Generate and review

Check every number against your source, since any generated answer can be wrong.

Set tolerances and import

Adjust answer tolerances in Moodle, then import the Moodle XML file on the Pro plan.

DeckOwl starts from your own lecture material, so the problems match what your students were taught. The free plan lets you try it in the browser, and the Pro plan adds Moodle XML export for moving questions into a course.

Generated answers still need a human check. Confirm units, rounding and the method against your source before you import anything into a live quiz.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set a tolerance on a Moodle numerical question?

In the question editor, enter the correct answer and a tolerance value. Moodle accepts any response within that range on either side, so an answer of 20 with a tolerance of 0.5 accepts 19.5 through 20.5.

How many numerical questions should a Moodle quiz have?

There is no fixed number, but a short quiz covering one topic is easier to review than a long one. Start with the formulas your lectures emphasize and add a question for each method students must learn.

Can DeckOwl export directly to Moodle?

Yes, Moodle XML export is available on the Pro plan at $14.99/month. The free plan works in the browser and does not include exports.

Do I need a paid plan to try it?

No. The free plan includes 3 generations per month, and no credit card is needed to start. The Plus plan adds unlimited generations and PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.
