Pull random questions from your Moodle question bank
Generate multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions from your PDFs, slides or notes, then export Moodle XML to draw random sets for each quiz attempt.
How random questions work in a Moodle quiz
Moodle can build each quiz attempt from random questions from a question bank, but the draw only works well when the bank is large enough that students see different sets. The quiz pulls a set number of items from one category each time an attempt starts.
- Keep one topic per question bank category so random draws stay balanced.
- Set the number of random questions below the number the category holds.
- Tick the option to include subcategories only when you want those questions in the pool.
- Run a test attempt as a student to confirm the draw looks right.

Moodle XML export
On the Pro plan, export your questions as Moodle XML and import them into a question bank category.
Start free
The Free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, with no credit card needed to start.
How it works
Upload your notes or slides
Add the files for one topic and generate a set of multiple-choice, true/false or short-answer questions.
Export and import the bank
Export Moodle XML on Pro and import it into one question bank category for that topic.
Add a random question to the quiz
In the Moodle quiz, add a random question from that category and set how many to draw.
Setting this up takes two parts: a populated category in the question bank, and a random question entry in the quiz itself. DeckOwl covers the first part by turning your PDFs, DOCX or PPTX files, notes, or photos of pages into questions with explanations.
Moodle XML export is on the Pro plan at $14.99 per month, and the file imports straight into a category so each random draw pulls from that topic. Free accounts get 3 generations per month and study in the browser.

Frequently asked questions
How many questions should a Moodle question bank hold before random selection?
Aim for at least two or three times as many questions as each quiz draws, so attempts differ without repeating too often. A bank built from a single chapter often needs more items for variety.
How do I organize a question bank for a Moodle quiz?
Group questions into a category by topic or chapter so each random draw pulls from one clear pool. Mixing unrelated topics in one category makes random quizzes harder to balance.
Does DeckOwl export to Moodle XML?
Yes, Moodle XML and QTI 2.1 export are included on the Pro plan at $14.99 per month. The Free plan covers browser study only, without exports.
