How a Moodle quiz set up usually works

Your Moodle quiz set up goes faster when the questions already exist. Moodle keeps questions in a question bank, so the usual sequence is to write the questions first, then attach them to a quiz activity.

  • Create or import questions in the question bank before adding them to the quiz.
  • Set open and close dates so students can only start attempts in the window you choose.
  • Choose a grading method for multiple attempts, such as highest grade or last attempt.
  • Preview the quiz as a student before publishing it.
Example Moodle quiz setup questions
In Moodle, where do quiz questions live before they are added to a quiz? The question bank. Questions are created there once and can be reused across quizzes.
What does the Shuffle questions setting do in a Moodle quiz?It randomizes question order for each attempt, which makes copying from a neighbor harder.
Which setting controls how many times a student can submit a Moodle quiz?Attempts allowed. Set it to unlimited for practice quizzes so students can retake them.
Which Moodle quiz settings control when students can start an attempt? The open and close dates. They define the window in which attempts can begin.
When a student has several attempts, which grading method keeps only the best score?Highest grade. The other options are average grade, first attempt and last attempt.

Three question types

Get multiple choice, true/false and open questions from the same material, with an explanation for each answer.

Built from your files

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages. Images are read with text recognition.

Moodle XML export

The Pro plan exports questions as Moodle XML, so you can import them into your question bank instead of typing each one.

How it works

Upload your material

Add the PDF, slides or notes the quiz should cover.

Review the questions

Check each question and explanation, and edit or remove any that don't fit your course.

Export for Moodle

On the Pro plan, export as Moodle XML and import into your course question bank, then add the questions to your quiz.

The quiz activity holds the settings: open and close dates, number of attempts, time limit, how questions are shuffled and how multiple attempts are graded. Set these after the questions are in place so you can check the full quiz before students see it.

DeckOwl can draft the questions from your own material. You still review them against your course content, since the explanations are only as accurate as the source you upload.
