Setting the time limit in Moodle

A Moodle quiz time limit is set in the Timing section of the quiz settings, where you tick Enable beside Time limit and enter the duration. The limit applies to each attempt separately, so a student who retakes the quiz gets a fresh window.

  • Open the quiz settings and expand the Timing section before saving.
  • Match the time limit to the number and difficulty of questions.
  • Check the 'When time expires' option so students know whether attempts submit automatically.
  • Review generated questions against your slides before the quiz goes live.
Example Moodle quiz timing questions with answers
In Moodle, where do you set a quiz time limit? In the quiz settings under the Timing section, by ticking Enable beside Time limit. This keeps the countdown attached to the quiz itself, not to the course.
What does the 'When time expires' setting control? What happens to an open attempt when the time limit runs out, such as automatic submission. It stops students from working past the limit without a clear rule.
What is a grace period in a Moodle quiz?Extra time after the limit in which a student can still submit an open attempt, where the expiry setting allows it. It gives a buffer for connection problems or late clicks.
Does a Moodle time limit apply per attempt or per quiz?It applies per attempt, so the clock starts when each attempt begins. A student who retakes the quiz receives a new time window.
How is the time limit different from the open and close dates?Open and close dates control when students can start the quiz, while the time limit controls how long one attempt lasts. Both are found in the Timing section.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set a time limit on a Moodle quiz?

Open the quiz, go to Settings, expand Timing, tick Enable beside Time limit, and enter the duration. Students see a countdown once they start an attempt.

Many instructors allow about a minute per true/false item and a few minutes per multiple-choice item, then adjust for difficulty. Test a few questions yourself to check the pace.

Can DeckOwl set the time limit inside Moodle?

No, DeckOwl creates the questions and exports them as Moodle XML on the Pro plan, so you still set timing in your Moodle quiz settings.

Is there a free plan?

Yes, the Free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, but no exports. Moodle XML export requires Pro at $14.99/month.
