Why build your own NCLEX-PN practice test

Most LPN candidates have a stack of lecture slides, handouts and review chapters, but no single book covers exactly what their program taught. An NCLEX practice test for LPN students works best when it is built from that material, so the questions match the pharmacology, fluid balance and med-surg topics you need to master. A printable, ready-made test can still help, but it rarely lines up with your own course content.

  • Prioritize safety questions on ABCs, medication administration and infection control.
  • Read the rationale for wrong answers, not just the correct choice.
  • Mix question types so true/false and short answer items do not become easy recall.
  • Retake missed questions after a day or two to strengthen recall.
Example NCLEX-PN practice questions
A client receiving digoxin has a heart rate of 52 beats per minute. What should the LPN do first?Hold the dose and notify the provider. A low heart rate is a common hold parameter for digoxin, and the provider needs to assess the client before the next dose.
A client on a heparin infusion has an aPTT well above the target range. What should the LPN do first?Stop or hold the infusion and notify the provider. Excessive anticoagulation raises the risk of bleeding, so the provider must reassess the dose.
Which client should the LPN assess first: a client with a temperature of 38.2 C, or a client with new shortness of breath and an oxygen saturation of 86%?The client with shortness of breath and low oxygen saturation. Airway and breathing problems take priority over a low-grade fever.
What should the LPN check before giving a prescribed rapid-acting insulin dose? The blood glucose reading and the provider's order parameters. The dose depends on the reading, so giving it without checking can cause hypoglycemia.
A client taking a loop diuretic is at risk for which electrolyte imbalance?Hypokalemia. Loop diuretics increase potassium loss in the urine, so the LPN should monitor potassium levels and report symptoms like muscle weakness.
