What this tool does and does not do

Drag-and-drop questions suit topics where order or pairing matters. DeckOwl does not include those question types, so it is not a full online drag and drop quiz maker; it writes multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer quizzes from your own notes instead.

  • Multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions from your own files
  • An explanation attached to every question
  • Photos of pages read with text recognition
  • Browser study on the free plan, with exports on paid plans
Example HTML5 drag and drop practice questions
Which attribute makes an HTML element draggable?draggable="true". Setting this attribute allows the browser to start a drag from that element.
Which event fires on the dragged element when the drag starts?dragstart. Handlers for this event often call dataTransfer.setData() to store what is being dragged.
What must a dragover handler do for a drop to be allowed?Call event.preventDefault(). Browsers block drops by default, so this cancels that default and lets the drop event fire.
Which method reads data stored during a drag?dataTransfer.getData(). The drop handler calls it with the same format used in setData, such as text/plain.
Which event fires on the source element when a drag ends?dragend. It fires after a drop or after the drag is cancelled, so it is a common place to remove drag styling.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between dragstart and drop in HTML5?

The dragstart event fires on the element being dragged when the user begins the drag. The drop event fires on the target element when the dragged item is released over it and the drop is allowed.

Why does the drop event not fire unless dragover is handled?

By default, browsers block drops onto most elements, so drop does not fire. Calling event.preventDefault() in the dragover handler marks the target as a valid drop zone.

Can DeckOwl create drag-and-drop questions?

No. DeckOwl generates multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions, each with an explanation, from your own material.

Can I export my quiz to other tools?

PDF and DOCX export are on the Plus plan, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are on Pro. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.
