Why a custom practice test beats a generic one

Most ready-made practice tests cover a generic syllabus, so a PDF to practice test tool works better when the file is your own lecture, textbook chapter or set of notes. DeckOwl reads the text and writes multiple-choice, true/false or short-answer questions that match what you actually studied.

  • Reads text from PDFs, slides, DOCX files and photographed pages
  • Multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer formats
  • Explanations written for every answer
  • Free plan to start, with no credit card needed
Example basic algebra practice test questions
Solve 2x + 5 = 13.x = 4. Subtracting 5 from both sides gives 2x = 8, and dividing both sides by 2 gives x = 4.
True or false: if x/2 = 6, then x = 3.False. Multiplying both sides by 2 gives x = 12, because you must undo the division by 2 rather than halve the answer.
Solve 3(x - 2) = 12.x = 6. Dividing both sides by 3 gives x - 2 = 4, and adding 2 to both sides gives x = 6.
Solve for y: 4y - 7 = 2y + 9.y = 8. Subtracting 2y from both sides gives 2y - 7 = 9, then adding 7 and dividing by 2 gives y = 8.
Solve x^2 = 49.x = 7 or x = -7. Both values square to 49, so a square equation can have two solutions unless the problem restricts x.

Built from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photos of pages, and the questions are written from what you actually studied.

Explanations for every answer

Each question includes an explanation, so a wrong answer shows you exactly why the correct one works.

Export on paid plans

Plus includes PDF and DOCX export. Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for course platforms.

How it works

Upload your file

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or a photo of a page.

Choose question types

Pick multiple choice, true/false or short answer, or mix them in one practice test.

Practice or export

Study in the browser on the free plan, or export your test on Plus or Pro.

Each question comes with an explanation, so a wrong answer teaches you why the right one works. Test yourself before an exam, then generate a fresh set from the same material to practice again.

Frequently asked questions

How many practice questions should I make for basic algebra equations?

Start with 10 to 15 questions covering one-step, two-step and variables-on-both-sides equations. Add more once you can solve each type without checking the explanation.

How do I study algebra equations effectively?

Solve each problem by hand before reading the explanation, then redo the ones you missed a day later. Writing the inverse operation at each step makes your reasoning easy to check.

Can I export the practice test?

PDF and DOCX export is included on Plus, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are on Pro. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan with 3 generations per month without adding a card.
