Build a practice test from what you already studied

Most students reread their notes before an exam, then find the real test asks questions they never practiced answering. A practice test question generator closes that gap by turning your own material into questions you can answer and check. DeckOwl reads the text in your files and writes questions that use your instructor's terms and emphasis, not generic quiz content.

  • Multiple-choice, true/false and short answer formats in one set
  • Explanations for every answer, right or wrong
  • Study in the browser on the free plan, with 3 generations per month
  • PDF and DOCX export on Plus, QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export on Pro
Example practice questions for basic algebra equations
Solve for x: 2x + 6 = 14x = 4. Subtract 6 from both sides to get 2x = 8, then divide both sides by 2.
Solve for x: 3(x - 2) = 12x = 6. Dividing both sides by 3 first isolates the parentheses, leaving x - 2 = 4.
True or false: x = -3 is a solution to 2x + 5 = -1True. Substituting gives 2(-3) + 5 = -6 + 5 = -1, which matches the right side.
Solve for x: 5x - 7 = 3x + 9x = 8. Subtract 3x from both sides to get 2x - 7 = 9, add 7 to get 2x = 16, then divide by 2.
Solve for x: x/4 + 1 = 5x = 16. Subtract 1 from both sides to get x/4 = 4, then multiply both sides by 4.

Three question types

Multiple-choice, true/false and short answer questions generated from the same material.

Explanations included

Each question comes with an explanation so you learn why the right answer is right.

Export when you need it

PDF and DOCX on Plus, QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML on Pro for courses that run on an LMS.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text notes or a photo of a page.

Choose question types

Pick multiple-choice, true/false or short answer, or mix them in one set.

Study or export

Take the practice test in your browser, or export it on a paid plan.

Start with the topics your course stresses most, then work through the set without looking at your notes. The explanations show why each wrong answer fails, which is where most of the learning happens. Use the output for self-testing, study groups or a quick review before a class quiz.

Frequently asked questions

How many practice questions should I make for basic algebra equations?

Start with a short set that covers one skill, such as one-step equations, then add multi-step and fraction problems once those feel steady. Redo the questions you missed before moving on to new types.

Should I practice solving equations or just read worked examples?

Solving problems on your own builds the skill much faster than rereading worked examples. Cover the steps, attempt each equation, then compare your answer and explanation with the solution.

Can I export my practice test on the free plan?

No, the free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, but exports are paid. PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export are on Plus, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are on Pro.

Is there a discount for students?

Yes, students get 40% off with a school email. No credit card is needed to start.
