Printing a quiz from your own course content

A paper quiz for Monday's review session is often easier to hand out than sending students into a login page. If you need to print out a Canvas quiz, start with the material your students already have, such as lecture slides or chapter notes.

  • Works with PDFs, slides, DOCX files, notes and photos of pages
  • Multiple-choice, true/false and short answer questions with explanations
  • PDF export for printing on Plus and above
  • QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export on Pro
Example biology quiz questions (sample topic)

True or false: osmosis moves water toward the side with lower solute concentration.False. Water moves toward the side with higher solute concentration, where it is more dilute.
What is the net ATP yield of glycolysis per glucose molecule?2 ATP. Four are produced, but two are spent in the energy investment phase.

Built from your material

Questions come from the PDFs, slides, DOCX files or notes you upload, so the quiz matches what your class actually covered.

Explanations for every answer

Each question includes a short explanation, so a printed quiz doubles as a review sheet for students.

Export when you need it

Paid plans export to PDF for printing and to QTI 2.1 or Moodle XML for uploading to a learning management system.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or a photo of a page. Text in images is read with text recognition.

Choose question types

Pick multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions, and set how many you want.

Print or export

Review the questions, then export to PDF to print, or to QTI 2.1 if you are uploading the quiz to Canvas.

Generating the questions from your own files keeps the quiz aligned with what you taught. You can check each question and explanation before exporting, which makes it simpler to adjust wording or remove anything that does not match your course.

Once the quiz is ready, export it to PDF for printing or to QTI 2.1 for upload to Canvas. Exports are included in paid plans, and the free plan lets you study in the browser.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should a practice quiz have?

Ten to fifteen questions is a common length for a single review session, since it leaves time for explaining the answers. Shorter quizzes work well for a single chapter.

What should I do with questions I got wrong?

Read the explanation, then write the correct answer in your own words without looking at the notes. Retest those questions a day or two later so the answer is retained.

Can I export the quiz to Canvas?

QTI 2.1 export is available on the Pro plan, and that file can be imported into Canvas. PDF export for printing is included in the Plus plan.

Can I print a quiz on the free plan?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and lets you study in the browser, but it does not include exports. Upgrading to Plus enables PDF export.
