Why build your own daily quiz

A pub quiz of the day works best when the questions match your group's interests, not a generic list pulled from the internet. Writing a round from scratch takes an hour or more, and most lists repeat the same trivia that everyone has already heard.

  • Questions are drawn from your own uploaded material
  • Multiple-choice, true/false and open formats in one tool
  • Explanations included with each question for quick checking
  • Free plan to try a round before you pay
Example general knowledge trivia questions
What is the largest organ of the human body? The skin. It covers the entire body, so it has the greatest surface area of any organ.
What is the capital of Australia?Canberra. It was chosen as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne and built as a purpose-designed capital.
Which gas makes up most of Earth's atmosphere?Nitrogen, at about 78 percent by volume. Oxygen makes up around 21 percent.
In which year did the Berlin Wall fall?1989. East Germany opened its border crossings on 9 November 1989, which led to the wall's collapse.
How many players from one side are on the field in a standard cricket match?Eleven. Each side fields eleven players at a time, the same number as a soccer team.

Questions from your material

Upload PDFs, PPTX slides, DOCX files, plain notes or photos of pages, and get questions based on what you provided.

Three question formats

Choose multiple-choice, true/false or open questions, so each round can mix formats the way a real quiz does.

Explanations for the quizmaster

Every question comes with an explanation, so you can settle disputes at the bar without looking anything up.

How it works

Upload your source

Add a PDF, slide deck, document, notes or a photo of a page to start.

Pick the format and count

Choose multiple-choice, true/false or open questions and how many you want for tonight's round.

Run the round

Read the questions aloud, then use the explanations to check answers and keep the scoring fair.

DeckOwl reads the material you give it and writes questions that stay close to that content. You can start a new round each day from a different chapter, article or set of notes, which keeps the quiz fresh for regulars.

The free plan includes three generations per month, and no credit card is needed to start. Paid plans add unlimited generations and exports for teams that run quizzes every week.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should a pub quiz round include?

Rounds of about eight to ten questions are common, since that keeps each round short enough to hold attention. You can adjust the count in DeckOwl to suit your format.

How do I make trivia harder without making it obscure?

Aim for questions built on specific details, such as a date, a cause or a named place, rather than questions that are hard only because the topic is unfamiliar. Avoid wording that gives the answer away in the question itself.

Can I export the quiz to Moodle or QTI?

QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are part of the Pro plan at $14.99 per month. The Plus plan at $39 per year or $7.99 per month adds PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No credit card is needed to start. The free plan includes three generations per month and lets you study in the browser, but it does not include exports.
