How to run a weekly pub quiz from your own material

Most people hosting a weekly pub quiz end up writing questions by hand the night before. You can skip that by uploading a few articles, slides or notes and asking DeckOwl for a pub quiz of the week in multiple-choice, true/false or open questions, each with an explanation.

  • Mix rounds by theme, such as history, geography, science and pop culture, by uploading one source per round.
  • Ask for multiple-choice questions for quick answers and open questions for the final round.
  • Keep the explanation on each question so the host can settle disputes without searching.
  • Reuse a source later in the season to generate a fresh set of questions on the same topic.
Example general knowledge trivia questions for a weekly quiz

How many bones are in the typical adult human body?206, because many bones in infants fuse together as the body develops.
Which is the largest ocean on Earth? The Pacific Ocean, which covers more area than all of Earth's land combined.
Who painted the Mona Lisa?Leonardo da Vinci, who painted it in the early 1500s, and it now hangs in the Louvre in Paris.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should a weekly trivia round have?

Many pub quiz rounds use around 10 to 15 questions, so a set of 12 to 15 per round is a practical target. Shorter rounds keep players engaged when the night has several rounds.

What makes a good general knowledge trivia question?

It has one clearly correct answer that most people can check, and the wrong options are plausible without being tricky. Avoid questions that hinge on a single obscure date or name.

Can I export a weekly quiz to PDF?

Yes, PDF and DOCX export are included in the Plus plan, which costs $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Is there a free plan to try this first?

Yes, the free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and no credit card is needed to start. Students get 40% off with a school email.
