Writing a round that works on a Thursday night

A good pub quiz round needs questions that are varied, fair and checked before anyone sits down. Writing thirty trivia questions by hand takes hours, and it is easy to repeat the same subject or leave an answer open to argument.

  • Aim for a spread of easy, medium and hard questions across each round.
  • Check that every multiple-choice question has only one clearly correct option.
  • Use true/false questions sparingly, since guessing gives a fifty-fifty chance.
  • Keep a short explanation for each answer so the host can settle disputes quickly.
Example general knowledge trivia questions

Which element has the chemical symbol Au?Gold. The symbol comes from the Latin word aurum.
How many players from one team are on the pitch during a soccer match?Eleven, including the goalkeeper.
Who wrote the novel Pride and Prejudice?Jane Austen. It was first published in 1813.

Multiple choice, true/false and open questions

Choose the question style that suits your room, from quick true/false rounds to open questions that need a short written answer.

Explanations for every answer

Each question comes with a short explanation, so you can settle a dispute at the bar and check that the answer is right before the quiz starts.

Export for your quiz night

On the Plus plan you can export to PDF or DOCX to print answer sheets, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, slides, a DOCX file, plain notes or a photo of a page. Pick the topics you want covered.

Choose the question type and count

Select multiple choice, true/false or open questions, then set how many you need for each round.

Review and print

Check the questions and explanations, edit anything that is unclear, and export a copy for the night.

DeckOwl reads your own notes or reference sheets and drafts questions with the correct answer and a one-line explanation. You then cut weak questions, rewrite any unclear wording and mix categories such as history, science and geography so every table has something to answer.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should a trivia round have?

Many quiz hosts use rounds of eight to ten questions, which keeps the pace steady and gives each table time to discuss. Adjust the number to how long your session runs.

How do I write general knowledge questions that are hard but fair?

Pick facts that most people could work out with a clue, and avoid obscure details that only one person in the room would know. Test each question with someone who has not seen the answer.

Can I export the questions for printing?

Exports to PDF and DOCX are part of the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser with 3 generations per month and needs no credit card to start.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No. You can start on the free plan without entering a credit card, and students get 40% off with a school email.
