How categories make a quiz easier to study

A quiz category generator works best when each question is tied to a specific part of the material. A biology quiz that mixes cell structure, genetics and ecology is harder to review than one split into those three groups, because you can see exactly where your gaps are.

  • Categories come from the headings in your own material, not a generic template.
  • Each question includes an explanation so you can see why an answer is correct.
  • You can mix multiple choice, true/false and short-answer questions in one quiz.
  • Scores by category show which topics need another review session.
Example biology quiz questions by category
Which organelle is the site of aerobic respiration in eukaryotic cells?Mitochondria. They produce most of the cell's ATP through the citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation.
True or false: prokaryotic cells have a membrane-bound nucleus.False. Prokaryotes keep their DNA in a nucleoid region that is not enclosed by a nuclear membrane.
What molecule carries amino acids to the ribosome during translation?Transfer RNA (tRNA). Each tRNA pairs its anticodon with a matching codon on the mRNA.
Which phase of mitosis lines chromosomes up along the cell's equator?Metaphase. Spindle fibers attach to the centromeres and align the chromosomes at the metaphase plate.
What is the main function of the Golgi apparatus? It modifies, sorts and packages proteins and lipids so they can be delivered to their correct destinations.

Questions grouped by topic

Each question is filed under a category taken from your headings, chapters or slide titles, so you can study one section at a time.

Explanations on every answer

Each question comes with a short explanation of why the correct answer is right, which makes wrong answers easier to learn from.

Study in the browser or export

Practice on the free plan in your browser. Paid plans add PDF and DOCX export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for course sites.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of a page. Photos are read with text recognition.

Review the categories

DeckOwl groups the questions under the topics it finds. Rename or reorder them to match your course.

Practice or export

Work through the quiz in your browser, or export it if you are on a paid plan.

Start with the structure already in your notes. Chapter titles, unit headings and slide titles usually make good categories. Keep each category focused on one idea, and check that every category has enough questions to show whether you understand it.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should each category in a quiz have?

Aim for at least five questions per category so that one lucky guess does not distort your results. Categories with only one or two questions show less about what you actually know.

How do I choose categories for a study quiz?

Start from the headings in your source material, such as chapters, units or slide titles. Group related terms under each heading, and merge any categories that only have a question or two.

Can I export category-sorted quizzes?

Yes. PDF and DOCX export are included with Plus at $39/year or $7.99/month. QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are part of Pro at $14.99/month.

Is there a free plan?

Yes. The Free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, but it does not include exports.
