How the picture part works

A quiz maker for friends with pictures is most useful when the pictures are the source material, such as photos of a textbook page, a whiteboard or a handout. DeckOwl reads the text in those photos and turns it into questions, so the quiz follows what is actually written.

  • Photos of printed pages are read with text recognition.
  • Each question includes an explanation of the correct answer.
  • Multiple-choice, true/false and open questions are available.
  • Free plan includes 3 generations per month with no card needed.
Example biology quiz questions for a study group
Which organelle is the site of photosynthesis in plant cells? The chloroplast, because it contains chlorophyll that captures light energy.
True or false: Mitochondria carry their own DNA.True. Mitochondria have a small circular genome, which is one reason they are thought to descend from bacteria.
What does osmosis describe? The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane toward the side with higher solute concentration.
Which blood type is the universal donor for red cells?O negative, because it lacks A, B and Rh antigens, so it rarely triggers an immune reaction.
In the Krebs cycle, which molecule is regenerated at the end?Oxaloacetate, which combines with acetyl-CoA to start the cycle again.

Photos of pages

Snap a page from a textbook or handout and it is read with text recognition, so the printed words become quiz material.

Three question types

Multiple-choice, true/false and open questions, each with an explanation that shows why the answer is right.

Free to start

The free plan includes 3 generations a month and studying in the browser. No credit card is needed to begin.

How it works

Add your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text file or photos of pages.

Pick a question type

Choose multiple-choice, true/false or open questions, then generate the quiz.

Quiz yourself or your group

Work through the questions in the browser and read the explanation after each answer.

Questions are text-based. The tool does not create image-based questions from the pictures themselves, so a diagram without labels will contribute less than a page of printed words. Photos work best when they are sharp and flat, with the text fully in frame.

Exports need a paid plan. The free plan studies in the browser, Plus adds PDF and DOCX export, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for school systems.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should a study quiz have?

Ten to twenty questions per topic is a practical range, since a shorter quiz is easier to finish in one sitting. Shorter sets also make it simpler to repeat the quiz until the answers stick.

What makes a good multiple-choice wrong answer?

Wrong options should be plausible and tied to common mistakes, such as confusing osmosis with diffusion. Avoid options that are obviously false, because they do not test understanding.

Can I turn photos of my notes into a quiz?

Yes. Photos of pages are read with text recognition, so the quiz is built from the printed words in the image. Clear, well-lit photos give the best results.

Can I export a quiz to share with friends?

Free plans study in the browser without exports. PDF and DOCX export are part of Plus at $39/year or $7.99/month, and QTI and Moodle XML export are part of Pro at $14.99/month.
