How to practice was and were

Mixing up was and were is one of the most common past-tense errors, and the quickest fix is short daily practice with a was or were quiz built from your own class material.

  • Write one sentence per day with was and one with were, then check the subject.
  • Say the sentence aloud. If it sounds like 'you was', switch to 'you were'.
  • Use there was or there were by checking the noun that comes after the verb.
  • Retry missed questions after a day or two so the rule moves to long-term memory.
Example was or were practice questions
Yesterday the kids ___ at the park. (was / were)were. The plural subject 'the kids' takes were.
I ___ tired after the exam. (was / were)was. The first-person singular subject 'I' takes was.
True or false: 'You was late' is correct in standard English.False. The subject 'you' always takes were, even when it refers to one person.
There ___ three messages waiting for me. (was / were)were. In 'there was/were', the verb agrees with the noun after it, and 'three messages' is plural.
The keys ___ on the table this morning. (was / were)were. 'Keys' is plural, so the past tense of be becomes were.

Questions from your material

Paste notes, upload a PDF or photograph a page. The questions come from the sentences your teacher actually wrote.

Multiple choice, true/false and open

Mix question types so you practice choosing, judging and writing the correct form of to be in the past tense.

Explanations for every answer

Each answer says whether the subject is singular or plural, so the rule sticks instead of just the right letter.

How it works

Add your notes

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or a photo of the page.

Choose the question type

Pick multiple choice, true/false or short answer, then generate the quiz.

Practice until it sticks

Answer, read the explanation and retry the questions you missed.

Most mistakes come from the subject, not the verb. I, he, she, it and singular nouns take was, while you, we, they and plural nouns take were. Questions that ask you to find the subject first build that habit.

Keep sessions short, review the explanations for missed items, and repeat the same set a few days later to check what you kept.
