Upload your notes to make a quiz that tests what you actually know
Drop in a PDF, a slide deck, a document or a photo of your page. DeckOwl writes multiple-choice, true/false and short answer questions with explanations, so you can find the gaps before your exam.
How to upload notes and get a quiz
Many students reach for a ready-made quiz, but the best practice questions come from your own lecture notes and readings. To upload notes to make a quiz, start with the file you already study from. DeckOwl reads the text and writes questions that match your course's wording and emphasis.
- Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages
- Choose multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions
- Read an explanation for every question, right or wrong
- Export to PDF, DOCX or Anki on Plus, and QTI or Moodle XML on Pro
Works with the files you already have
Upload PDFs, DOCX files, PPTX slides, plain text or photos of handwritten pages. Text recognition reads the images.
Explanations for every answer
Each question comes with a short explanation of why the correct answer is right, so a wrong guess becomes a lesson.
Mixed question types
Choose multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions, or combine them in one quiz built from your material.
How it works
Upload your notes
Add a PDF, slides, a document, pasted text or a photo of your notes.
Pick a question type
Choose multiple-choice, true/false or short answer. The quiz is built only from the material you uploaded.
Take the quiz and review
Answer the questions, read the explanations for anything you missed, and study the weak spots again.
Quiz questions work best when they test recall instead of recognition. Writing an answer from memory, then checking it against an explanation, builds stronger recall than rereading the same slides. A quiz built from your notes shows you which definitions and steps you can produce on demand.
On the free plan you can take quizzes in the browser. Plus and Pro add exports for PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV on Plus, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML on Pro, so you can move a quiz into your course tools.

Frequently asked questions
How many questions should a quiz on one lecture have?
Ten to fifteen questions is enough to check one lecture without becoming tedious. Retake the quiz a day or two later to see what you still remember.
Is it better to quiz myself or reread my notes?
Answering questions from memory and then checking the explanation usually produces stronger recall than rereading. Rereading still helps once you know which parts you missed.
Can I export the quiz I make?
Exports are paid features. PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV are included in Plus, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML are included in Pro. The free plan lets you study in the browser with 3 generations per month.
Can I upload a photo of my notes instead of a file?
Yes. Photos of pages are read with text recognition, so you can upload a picture of handwritten or printed notes along with PDFs and slides.
