How to build a German vocabulary quiz that sticks

Quizzing yourself on German words works better than rereading them, because you have to retrieve the meaning before you see it. A vocabulary quiz in German built from your own class list also tests the words your course actually uses, including the articles and plural forms that textbooks often bury.

  • Multiple-choice, true/false and open questions, each with an explanation.
  • Works from PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or a photo of a page of vocabulary.
  • Free plan: 3 generations per month, with quizzes studied in the browser.
  • Export to PDF or DOCX on Plus, and to QTI 2.1 or Moodle XML on Pro.
Example German vocabulary quiz questions
What does 'die Bibliothek' mean?Library. The noun is feminine, so it takes 'die' in the nominative singular.
Which article goes with 'das Mädchen'?das. Mädchen is neuter even though it refers to a girl, because the -chen diminutive suffix makes nouns neuter.
What is the English meaning of 'bekommen'?To get or receive. It is not the same as 'become', which is werden.
Translate 'Ich habe keine Zeit.'I have no time. Keine is the negative form used with a noun where English uses 'no'.
What does 'Wie spät ist es?' ask? What time is it. Spät means late, but in this question it asks for the time of day.

Start from PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or a photo of a page, and the quiz uses the words you are actually studying.

Study in the browser

The free plan lets you take quizzes right away, with no credit card needed to start.

How it works

Upload your word list

Add a German vocabulary list, a handout or a slide deck, or photograph a page from your textbook.

Pick a question type

Choose multiple choice, true/false or open questions, then generate the quiz.

Take it and retake the misses

Check each answer against its explanation, then retake the questions you missed until the words stick.

If you need a printable sheet, you can generate one from your own material instead of hunting for a generic one. Upload a word list, a textbook chapter or class slides, then export the quiz to PDF or DOCX on the Plus plan.

Frequently asked questions

How many words should a German vocabulary quiz cover?

A set of around 15 to 25 words on one topic, such as travel or food, is easy to review in one sitting. Shorter sets also make it clearer which words still need practice.

Should I learn German articles along with the vocabulary?

Yes. Every German noun has a gender, and der, die and das change with case, so questions that include the article are more useful than bare nouns. Write the article with the noun in your word list.

Can DeckOwl export a German vocabulary quiz?

PDF and DOCX export are part of the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month. QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are included in the Pro plan at $14.99/month.

Does DeckOwl need a credit card to start?

No. The free plan includes 3 generations per month, and students can get 40% off with a school email.
