How a custom vocabulary level quiz works

Most published vocabulary level quizzes are written for a generic learner, so the words on them may not match the book, course or word list you actually have.

  • Use the words from your current unit, not a generic list.
  • Mix question types so you test recognition and recall.
  • Read the explanation after every wrong answer.
  • Retake the quiz after a few days to see what you remember.

Questions from your own words

DeckOwl reads PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text and photos of pages, then writes questions about the vocabulary in your material.

Multiple-choice, true/false and open

Pick the question type that fits the level you are testing, from simple synonyms to definitions in context.

Explanations for every answer

Each question includes an explanation, so a wrong answer teaches you why the right word fits.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should a vocabulary level quiz have?

Ten to twenty questions is a practical range for a single study session. Shorter quizzes are easier to repeat, and you can make a new one from the same notes later.

How do I know which vocabulary level I am at?

Compare your results on a quiz built from your course words with your teacher's level descriptors, such as CEFR bands from A1 to C2. A consistent score above about 80 percent suggests the words are secure.

Can I export the quiz?

The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports. PDF and DOCX export are included in Plus, and QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML export are included in Pro.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card, which includes 3 generations per month.
