What makes a practice test hard, and how to build your own

Official College Board practice tests are the closest match to the real exam, so many students treat them as the hardest SAT practice tests they can find. Difficulty on the digital SAT also adapts: the second module in each section changes based on how you did on the first, so a strong start pushes the questions harder.

  • Math: multi-step word problems and questions that mix algebra with graphs
  • Reading and Writing: dense passages where several answers look correct
  • Timing: the second module in each section raises the pressure
  • Review: keep a list of every missed question and the rule it tested
Example SAT math and reading practice questions
If 3x + 7 = 2x - 4, what is x?x = -11. Subtracting 2x from both sides and then subtracting 7 isolates x.
What are the solutions to x² - 5x + 6 = 0?x = 2 or x = 3. The expression factors as (x - 2)(x - 3) = 0, so each factor can equal zero.
Is a line with slope -2 perpendicular to a line with slope 1/2?Yes. Perpendicular lines have slopes whose product is -1, and (-2)(1/2) = -1.
Why should you reread the cited lines in a Reading question before choosing an answer? The cited lines are the evidence the correct answer must match, and the choice that paraphrases them is usually right.
What is the value of 2³ × 2⁻¹?4. When multiplying powers with the same base, the exponents add: 3 + (-1) = 2, so 2² = 4.

Quizzes from your own material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, notes file or a photo of a page and get multiple-choice, true/false or short answer questions.

Explanations for every answer

Each question comes with an explanation, so a wrong pick shows you the rule you missed.

Export when you need it

Plus exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV, and Pro adds QTI 2.1 and Moodle XML for course sites.

How it works

Upload your prep material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, notes file or a photo of a practice test page.

Choose a question type

Pick multiple choice, true/false or short answer, then generate the set.

Study and review misses

Work through the quiz, read each explanation, and retry the questions you got wrong.

Unofficial prep books vary widely, and some questions are harder than anything on the real test. A better route is to build a quiz from the exact pages you struggled with, then rerun it until the explanations make sense.

DeckOwl turns your own practice test PDF or notes into questions with explanations, so you can focus on the sections that cost you the most points.

Frequently asked questions

Which section of the SAT practice tests is usually hardest?

Many students find the math section's multi-step word problems and the reading questions with dense evidence the most demanding. Tracking which question types you miss is more useful than relying on any single ranking.

How many practice questions should I do per week?

There is no single right number, but spreading shorter sets across several weeks usually works better than one long session. Review every missed question and write down the reason you missed it.

Can I export the quiz to PDF for printing?

Yes, PDF export is part of the Plus plan, which costs $39 per year or $7.99 per month. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.

Can I export to Moodle or QTI?

Moodle XML and QTI 2.1 export are included in the Pro plan at $14.99 per month. The free plan includes three generations per month that you can study in the browser.
