Why build your own radical deck

Most ready-made decks follow the standard Kangxi order, but your course may group radicals differently or use its own example characters. Building 214 Chinese radicals flashcards from your own material keeps the cards aligned with what you will be tested on.

  • Cards can show the radical, its variant form, its meaning and a sample character.
  • Spaced repetition spreads reviews across days so you retain more with less cramming.
  • Edit or delete any card the generator gets wrong before you start studying.
  • Export to Anki, PDF, DOCX or CSV is available on the Plus plan.

How it works

Upload your radical list

Add the page from your textbook, your instructor's slides, or a photo of your notes.

Check the generated cards

Each card pairs a character or radical with its meaning, pinyin, or an example. Edit anything that differs from your course.

Study on a schedule

Start reviewing right away. Spaced repetition brings back the radicals you are most likely to forget.

Radicals make more sense when you see them inside characters. A good card might show 氵 with the characters 河 and 海, so the meaning of water carries over to the characters you meet in reading. Practice this way and the radicals become tools for guessing unfamiliar characters.

When you study, keep the card fronts short and the backs specific. Say the radical name aloud, write it once, then recall the meaning before you flip the card.

Frequently asked questions

Which radicals should I learn first?

Start with the radicals that appear most often in your course vocabulary or your textbook chapter. Learning them alongside the characters you already know makes each one easier to remember.

Why do some radicals change shape inside characters?

Many radicals have simplified or compact forms when they sit on the left or bottom of a character, such as 忄 for 心 and 扌 for 手. Seeing these variants on the card helps you recognize them in real text.

Can I get a printable set of radical flashcards instead?

DeckOwl does not offer ready-made printable sets. It generates a custom deck from the material you upload, and exporting that deck to PDF is available on the Plus plan.

Is the free plan enough to try it?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, and no credit card is needed to start. Exports require a paid plan.
