Why generate your own beginner Chinese cards

Printable beginner Chinese flashcards are easy to find online, but they rarely match the characters your class or textbook uses this week. DeckOwl takes your own material, whether a PDF, slide deck, typed notes or a photo of a vocabulary page, and generates flashcards from it. Each card has the term on one side and its meaning on the other, ready to study in the browser.

  • Pinyin with tone marks on the front, characters and English on the back
  • Separate cards for tricky tone pairs you keep mixing up
  • Example sentences from your own lesson pages for context
  • Stroke-order and radical notes taken straight from your handouts
Example beginner Chinese flashcards
你好nǐ hǎo: hello, the standard everyday greeting.
谢谢xièxie: thank you.
我是学生wǒ shì xuéshēng: I am a student.
不客气bú kèqi: you are welcome, literally 'do not be polite'.
对不起duìbuqǐ: sorry or excuse me.

Built from your material

Use the characters and words from your own class, textbook or handout instead of a generic list that may not match what you are learning.

Spaced repetition

Cards you find hard come back sooner, and familiar ones are spaced further apart, so you spend less time on what you already know.

Photos of pages work

Snap a picture of a vocabulary page or whiteboard and the text is read with recognition, then turned into cards you can edit.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text file or image of your Chinese vocabulary.

Review the cards

Check the generated fronts and backs, and fix any character or pinyin you want changed before studying.

Study on a schedule

Open the deck each day and rate how well you knew each card, and the spaced repetition schedule adjusts from there.

Beginners tend to do best with small batches. Start with ten to twenty new characters, review them daily, and let spaced repetition bring back the ones you miss. Pinyin, tones and English meaning can share one card or be split into separate cards, depending on what you find easier to recall.

The free plan includes three generations a month and browser study. Plus adds unlimited generations and exports to Anki, PDF, DOCX and CSV for students who want to study in other apps.

Frequently asked questions

How many beginner Chinese words should I learn each week?

Most beginners do well with 10 to 20 new words a week, reviewed daily, since spacing matters more than volume. Slow down the pace if your reviews start to pile up.

Should I learn tones with flashcards or separately?

Put the tone mark in the pinyin on the front of each card and say the word aloud before you flip it. Many learners also make a short separate set of tone-pair cards to drill the differences.

Can I export these flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is included with Plus, which also covers PDF, DOCX and CSV export. The free plan lets you generate three sets a month and study in the browser.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No, you can start on the free plan without a credit card. Students with a school email get 40% off Plus.
