How the image-based flashcard workflow works

Studying from a photographed page means typing out every term by hand, which is slow. An AI flashcard maker with images reads the text in your photos and turns it into cards you can review right away.

  • Photograph flat, well-lit pages so text recognition reads every line.
  • Combine a lecture slide deck and your typed notes in one set.
  • Split long chapters into sections so each batch makes focused cards.
  • Review missed cards daily and let spaced repetition space out the rest.
Example heart anatomy flashcards (human heart)
Which heart chamber receives oxygen-poor blood returning from the body? The right atrium. Blood returns through the superior and inferior vena cava and enters this chamber first.
What does the left ventricle do?It pumps oxygen-rich blood through the aorta to the body. Its wall is the thickest of the four chambers because it generates the most pressure.
Which valve sits between the left atrium and left ventricle? The mitral (bicuspid) valve. It keeps blood from flowing backward into the left atrium during contraction.
What is the sinoatrial node? The heart's natural pacemaker, located in the right atrium. It generates the electrical impulses that start each heartbeat.
What is the formula for cardiac output?Heart rate multiplied by stroke volume. It measures the volume of blood the heart pumps per minute.

Photos of pages

Snap a picture of a textbook page or handout. Text recognition reads the printed words so the key terms become cards.

Spaced repetition

Cards come back on a schedule, so the ones you miss appear more often and the ones you know appear less.

Exports on Plus

Export to Anki, PDF, DOCX or CSV on the Plus plan, which costs $39 a year or $7.99 a month.

How it works

Add your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or a photo of a page.

Generate cards

DeckOwl turns the content into flashcards in one pass.

Review on schedule

Study in the browser, and spaced repetition spaces out the cards you miss.

Photos work best when the page is flat, well lit and in focus. Check the generated cards against the source, since text recognition can misread small print or handwriting. Then trim any card that is too broad.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for the human heart?

Start with one card for each chamber, valve and major vessel, then add a card for each function. Trim cards that test more than one fact, and add new ones only after the first review shows gaps.

What is the difference between the left and right ventricle?

The right ventricle pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs, while the left ventricle pumps oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. The left ventricle has a thicker wall because it generates more pressure.

Can I make flashcards from photos of diagrams?

Photos of pages are read with text recognition, so printed labels and captions can become flashcards. Diagrams themselves are not turned into picture cards, so type out any key labels that matter.

Can I export the flashcards to Anki?

Yes, but export to Anki is a Plus feature, which also includes PDF, DOCX and CSV export. The free plan lets you study in the browser with 3 generations per month.
