Turn any letter chart into big alphabet flash cards

Printed alphabet sets are generic. DeckOwl builds cards from the letters, words and pictures your child or class is actually learning, then spaces the review for you.

Making alphabet flash cards from your own material

Big alphabet flash cards are useful for toddlers and early readers, but a generic printed set rarely matches the letter style or example words in the classroom or at home. DeckOwl lets you make alphabet flash cards from a photo of your own letter chart, worksheet or lesson notes.

  • One letter per card, with uppercase and lowercase shown together
  • An example word that starts with the letter's most common sound
  • Short daily sessions so the letters stick without fatigue
  • A printable PDF export on the Plus plan for a large physical set
Example alphabet flash cards for early readers
Letter A, uppercase and lowercaseA a, as in apple. Say the short vowel sound at the start of the word.
Letter BB b, as in ball. The sound is made by pressing both lips together, then releasing them.
Letter MM m, as in moon. The sound /m/ can be held steadily, which makes it easy to hear.
Letter SS s, as in sun. The sound /s/ is a hiss made by air passing between the teeth.
Letter GG g, as in goat. Before a, o or u it is hard, as in goat, but before e, i or y it can sound soft, as in giant.

Built from your material

Upload a photo of a letter chart, a worksheet, or typed notes, and the AI pulls out the letters and example words it finds.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, and cards you know drop out of rotation, so study time goes to the letters that need it.

Print-ready PDF export

Plus exports your set as a PDF you can print at whatever size your printer supports, with no need to retype anything.

How it works

Upload your source

Add a PDF, a DOCX, a slide deck, typed notes, or a clear photo of the page with the letters on it.

Review the generated cards

Check that each card shows the right letter, both cases if you want them, and a word that matches the sound.

Study or export

Study in the browser on the free plan, or export to PDF, Anki or CSV on Plus to print the cards at a large size.

Keep each card to one letter. Showing the uppercase and lowercase forms together, with one familiar picture word, helps a child connect the shape to the sound. Short sessions of a few minutes tend to work better than long drills, and the spaced review schedule keeps repeating the letters that are still shaky.

Once the cards are generated, check them before studying. Fix any word that does not start with the right sound, since a mismatched example is worse than none.

Frequently asked questions

How do I help a young child learn the alphabet with flashcards?

Keep each card to one letter, show uppercase and lowercase together, and pair it with a picture word the child already knows. Sessions of five to ten minutes are usually easier to sustain than one long drill.

What should go on the back of an alphabet flash card?

Put the letter's main sound and one familiar example word on the back, such as A for apple. Repeat any card the child gets wrong until it is answered correctly on several days.

Can I print my flashcards in a big size?

Exporting to PDF is a Plus feature, so you can print the set from there. DeckOwl does not set a custom card size, so adjust the scale in your printer settings to fit the cards.

Is there a free plan I can try first?

Yes, the free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, and no credit card is needed to start. Exports require Plus at $39/year or $7.99/month.
