Why a custom deck beats a generic one for particles

Ready-made decks cover the basics like は, が and を, but your textbook's particle lessons rarely match a shared deck line for line. DeckOwl turns your own lesson notes or PDF into an Anki deck for Japanese particles that follows the examples you are actually studying.

  • Cards built from your own lesson notes and textbook examples
  • Multiple choice and short answer quizzes alongside flashcards
  • Mind maps that group particles by function, such as place, time and direction
  • Anki export on the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month
Example Japanese particles flashcards for an Anki deck
What does the particle を mark in 本を読みます?It marks the direct object of the verb, so 本 is the thing being read: I read a book.
What is the main difference between は and が?は marks the topic, often with contrast or known context, while が marks the grammatical subject, often with new information or an answer to who or what.
What does に mark in 学校に行きます?It marks the destination of movement, so the sentence means I go to school. It also marks points in time and indirect objects.
What does で mark in 電車で行きます?It marks the means or method, so the sentence means I go by train. It also marks the place where an action happens, as in 図書館で勉強します.
What does の do in 私の本?It links two nouns to show possession or relation, so the phrase means my book.

Built from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or photos of pages. The cards reflect the examples your teacher or textbook actually uses.

Spaced repetition

Cards come back at the intervals where you are most likely to forget them, so particle distinctions stick instead of blurring together.

Export to Anki

On the Plus plan, export your deck to Anki as a file you can import and keep reviewing on any device Anki supports.

How it works

Upload your particle notes

Add the lesson PDF, slides or a photo of your handwritten grammar notes. Plain text works too.

Generate the flashcards

The AI pulls out particle rules and example sentences, then writes question and answer cards from them.

Study or export

Review in the browser on the free plan, or export an Anki deck on Plus and continue with spaced repetition there.

Particles are hard because one marker can do several jobs. The deck can ask you to pick the right particle in a full sentence, explain the difference between topic and subject, or identify the meaning of に versus で in context. Cards from your material keep those distinctions tied to the sentences you will see on your test.

Once the deck exists, spaced repetition brings back the particles you keep missing more often than the ones you already know. Export to Anki on Plus if you want to keep the same deck in the app you already use.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards should a Japanese particles deck have?

There is no fixed number, but a deck covering は, が, を, に, で, へ, と and の with two or three example sentences each is a practical start. Add cards as your course introduces new uses of each particle.

How should I study は versus が with flashcards?

Put a full sentence on the front with the particle blanked out, then explain the topic versus subject difference on the back. Reviewing that contrast across several sentences works better than memorizing a single rule.

Can I export the deck to Anki?

Yes, export to Anki is included in the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month, which also gives unlimited generations. The free plan allows three generations a month and studying in the browser, but not exports.

Can I generate the deck from photos of my notes?

Yes, photos of pages are read with text recognition, and PDF, DOCX, PPTX and plain text also work. Students get 40% off with a school email, and no credit card is needed to start.
