Why build your own Japanese verb deck

A Anki deck for Japanese verbs works best when it follows the verbs your course actually teaches. Prebuilt decks often include words you have not reached yet and skip the forms your teacher uses, so you end up reviewing the wrong material.

  • Keep each deck to one lesson's verbs so reviews stay manageable.
  • Make separate cards for dictionary, polite, te-form, negative and potential forms.
  • Add the example sentence from your textbook to the back of each card for context.
  • Check the generated cards against your notes before you start studying.
Example Japanese verb cards for Anki
Past polite form of 行く (iku)?行きました (ikimashita). 行く is a godan verb, and the polite past ends in ました.
Te-form of 飲む (nomu)?飲んで (nonde). Godan verbs ending in む change to んで in the te-form.
Negative plain form of する (suru)?しない (shinai). する is irregular, so memorize its forms.
Potential form of 食べる (taberu)?食べられる (taberareru). Ichidan verbs drop る and add られる.
Meaning of 見る (miru)? To see or look. 見る is an ichidan verb, and its polite form is 見ます.

Built from your material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or a photo of a page. Verbs and their forms come from the text you already use.

Spaced repetition

Cards resurface at the right time, so verb forms you miss come back more often than the ones you already know.

Export to Anki

On the Plus plan, export your deck to Anki, along with CSV and PDF files, and keep studying on any device.

How it works

Upload your verb material

Add a PDF, slide deck, notes or a photo of your vocabulary list.

Generate flashcards

DeckOwl creates cards for verbs and their forms, such as polite, te-form and negative.

Study or export

Review in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki on Plus.

Starting from your own notes also helps with conjugation. Each verb can become several cards, one per form, so you practice the pattern and not just the dictionary word. Spaced repetition then schedules those cards so the hard forms come back sooner.

Frequently asked questions

How do I learn Japanese verb conjugation with flashcards?

Make one card per form, such as dictionary, polite, te-form and negative, with the verb on the front. Review the cards daily so you recall the pattern rather than memorizing single words.

How many Japanese verbs should I study at once?

Small batches, such as the verbs from one lesson, work better than a long list. Spaced repetition then brings each batch back at intervals so the verbs stick.

Can I export the cards to Anki?

Yes, on the Plus plan ($39/year or $7.99/month), which also includes CSV and PDF export. The free plan lets you study in the browser, but exports are not included.

Do I need to buy a ready-made Anki deck?

Not necessarily. DeckOwl builds the deck from your own verb list, textbook pages or photos, so the cards match your course. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and needs no credit card to start.
