How deck presets shape your Anki reviews

Anki deck presets group the settings that control how many new cards you see each day, how long a card waits in its learning steps, and how far apart reviews are spaced.

  • New cards per day sets how many fresh cards appear, with 20 as the default.
  • Maximum reviews per day caps the review queue, with 200 as the default.
  • Learning steps control the short waits before a new card graduates, with 1m 10m as the default.
  • Graduating and easy intervals set the first review gap, with 1 day and 4 days as defaults.
Example Anki deck preset settings
What is the default number of new cards per day in an Anki preset?20 new cards per day, with a maximum of 200 reviews per day.
What do learning steps control in a deck preset? The short waits a new card goes through before it graduates to review, such as 1m 10m by default.
What is the graduating interval? The number of days until a card first moves from learning to review, which is 1 day by default.
What is the leech threshold in an Anki preset? The number of lapses before a card is tagged as a leech, which is 8 by default, so it can be fixed or rewritten.
Why use separate presets for different subdecks? Each preset applies to every deck using it, so a dense subject can have different daily limits than a short vocabulary list.

Spaced repetition built in

Flashcards are scheduled with spaced repetition, so cards you find hard come back sooner and easier ones wait longer.

Works from your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX or PPTX files, plain notes, or photos of pages. Text recognition reads images.

Export on paid plans

Plus includes Anki export, so your flashcards can move into the deck you already configured.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, slide deck, document, text file or image of a page. No credit card is needed to start.

Generate flashcards

DeckOwl creates flashcards from the material. Free accounts get 3 generations per month.

Export or study in the browser

Study online on any plan, or export to Anki on Plus after you set your preset limits.

Subdecks can share one preset or use their own. Changing a preset updates every deck that uses it, so keep separate presets for subjects with very different workloads, such as dense anatomy versus short vocabulary lists.

Start with the defaults, then adjust after a week. If reviews keep piling up, lower new cards per day. If you finish early and want more material, raise it gradually.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good number of new cards per day in an Anki preset?

Many students start with the default of 20 and raise it only when they consistently clear their reviews. If your backlog keeps growing, lower the number.

Should I change the learning steps or keep the default?

The default steps of 1m 10m work for most people. Shorter or extra steps can help with difficult material, but they add more reviews within the same session.

Can I export my DeckOwl flashcards to Anki?

Yes, export to Anki is included on the Plus plan, which costs $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card, and students get 40% off with a school email.
