How deck presets work in Anki

Anki deck presets are saved groups of study options that you attach to one or more decks. Instead of changing the same limits on every deck, you edit the preset once and every deck linked to it follows the change.

  • Presets hold the scheduling options, while each deck holds only its cards and the preset it uses.
  • A new card passes through learning steps before it moves to a review interval.
  • The daily new card limit controls how many unseen cards you start each day.
  • Changing a preset updates every deck assigned to it, which saves setup time.
Example Anki deck preset settings to study
What does a deck preset control? The study settings shared by every deck assigned to it, such as daily new card limits, learning steps and review limits.
What is a learning step in Anki?A short wait, such as one minute then ten minutes, that a new card passes through before it moves to a review interval.
What is the ease setting in a preset?A multiplier that controls how fast a card's review interval grows after each correct answer, so a lower ease brings cards back sooner.
What does the new cards per day limit do?It caps how many unseen cards Anki introduces each day, so your review queue stays manageable.
Why should several decks share one preset?Decks with similar difficulty can use the same options, so one change to the preset updates all of them at once.

Flashcards from your files

Upload a PDF, slides, DOCX, notes or a photo of a page and get flashcards built from that material.

Spaced repetition

Cards come back on a schedule that adjusts to how well you recall each one, so review time goes to the cards you miss.

Export to Anki

With Plus, export your decks to Anki, along with PDF, DOCX and CSV, so your settings can be applied there.

How it works

Add your material

Upload the file or paste your notes. Each one becomes a deck you can study on its own.

Generate the cards

DeckOwl writes flashcards from the content. Check them and remove anything you do not need.

Study or export

Review in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki with Plus and set the deck's preset there.

The settings inside a preset control how new cards are introduced and how old ones return. Daily new card limits, learning steps, review limits and the ease that sets how fast intervals grow are the main ones. Decks with similar difficulty usually share a preset so their schedules stay consistent.

If you already have notes or a textbook chapter, DeckOwl can make the flashcards first. Then you decide which deck and preset they belong to, and export them when you want Anki's scheduling.

Frequently asked questions

How many new cards per day should a preset allow?

Choose a number you can finish each day without falling behind on reviews. Raise it only after your review queue stays manageable for a week or two.

What is the difference between a learning step and a review interval?

A learning step is a short wait, usually minutes, before a new card graduates. A review interval is the longer gap, measured in days, that separates later reviews of a card you already know.

Can I export DeckOwl flashcards to Anki?

Yes, exporting to Anki is included with the Plus plan, which is $39 per year or $7.99 per month. The free plan lets you study in the browser but does not include exports.

Does the free plan include spaced repetition?

Spaced repetition is part of Plus, and the free plan gives you 3 generations per month for studying in the browser. You can start without a credit card.
