Pick the right Anki flashcard type for each topic
Basic, reversed, cloze and image occlusion each suit different material. Upload your PDFs, slides or notes and get flashcards with spaced repetition.
How the main Anki flashcard types differ
Choosing between Anki flashcard types comes down to what you are memorizing. A Basic card gives one question and one answer, which works for simple facts. A Basic (and reversed card) type makes two cards from one note, so you can recall a term from its definition and the definition from the term.
- Use Basic for single facts, such as a date or a definition.
- Use reversed cards for vocabulary, term pairs and symbols you need in both directions.
- Use cloze for sentences, lists and processes where the missing part is the key idea.
- Use image occlusion for anatomy, maps, circuits or any labeled diagram.
Cards built from your material
Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text file or photo of a page and get flashcards drawn from its content.
Spaced repetition built in
Cards come back at growing intervals so you review what you are about to forget.
Export to Anki on Plus
Plus includes Anki export, so your generated cards can move into the Anki app you already use.
How it works
Upload your notes
Add a PDF, slide deck, document, text file or image of a page.
Generate flashcards
DeckOwl turns the material into flashcards you can review in the browser.
Study or export
Review with spaced repetition, or export to Anki, PDF, DOCX or CSV on Plus.
Cloze cards hide parts of a sentence, so one note can produce several cards, each with a different blank. Image occlusion hides labeled areas of a diagram or map. Matching the type to the material keeps reviews focused and avoids cards that test the wrong thing.

Frequently asked questions
Which Anki card type is best for memorizing definitions?
A Basic card works for most definitions, and a reversed card helps when you also need to recall the term from its meaning. Choose reversed only when both directions matter for the exam.
How many flashcards should I make for a single lecture?
Most lectures yield a manageable set when you keep one fact per card and skip material you already know well. Start with the key terms and add more cards after you see which ones you miss.
Can I export DeckOwl flashcards to Anki?
Yes, but Anki export is a paid feature included in Plus. The Free plan lets you study flashcards in the browser without exports.
Does DeckOwl require a credit card to start?
No, you can start on the Free plan without a credit card. The Free plan includes 3 generations per month.
