Why keyboard shortcuts speed up Anki review

Reviewing with Anki flashcard keyboard shortcuts keeps your hands on the keyboard, so each card takes seconds instead of a mouse trip. Space reveals the answer, and the number keys 1 to 4 rate how well you recalled it.

  • Space or Enter shows the answer.
  • Keys 1 to 4 rate a card as Again, Hard, Good or Easy.
  • Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on Mac) undoes the last action.
  • E edits the current card while you review.

Shortcuts matter most when a deck is long. Rating with 1 for Again, 2 for Hard, 3 for Good and 4 for Easy keeps your rhythm steady, and Ctrl+Z undoes a mistaken rating so you do not lose your place.

Editing shortcuts help too. E opens the current card for editing during review, and Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I and Ctrl+U apply bold, italic and underline in the editor. Learn a few at a time instead of memorizing the full list.
