Why video lessons need a text version first

Watching a lecture rarely turns into Anki flashcards from video on its own, because Anki works best with clear question and answer pairs. Start by getting the spoken content into text: paste a transcript, or type the key points you noted while watching.

  • Copy the auto-generated transcript and remove filler text before you paste it in.
  • Add your own notes on any slide or diagram the transcript describes poorly.
  • Split long lectures into sections so each set of cards covers one topic.
  • Review the generated cards once and delete any that restate the same fact.
Example ecology flashcards: ecosystems and food webs
What is a trophic level? The position an organism holds in a food chain, such as producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer or decomposer.
Why is energy lost between trophic levels?Organisms use much of their energy for metabolism and body heat, so only a small fraction, roughly 10 percent, is usually passed on to the next level.
What is the difference between a food chain and a food web?A food chain is one linear path of energy flow, while a food web shows many interconnected chains within the same ecosystem.
What role do decomposers play in an ecosystem? They break down dead matter and waste, returning nutrients such as nitrogen and carbon to soil and water so producers can use them.
What is a keystone species?A species whose removal causes outsized changes to its ecosystem, such as sea otters limiting sea urchin numbers in kelp forests.

Text in, cards out

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text file or a photo of your notes. DeckOwl turns the content into flashcards, quizzes and mind maps.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you miss come back sooner, so you spend your study time on the terms you have not learned yet.

Export to Anki on Plus

The Plus plan exports your cards to Anki, along with PDF, DOCX and CSV. The free plan includes browser study with 3 generations per month.

How it works

Get the video content into text

Copy the transcript from the video, or type the key points you wrote down while watching.

Generate your flashcards

Paste the text or upload it as a file. DeckOwl builds question and answer cards from the material.

Study, then export

Review cards with spaced repetition in your browser, or export them to Anki on the Plus plan.

DeckOwl then takes that text and builds flashcards with spaced repetition, so the terms you miss come back sooner. Keep each card to one idea, and check the output against the video before you rely on it.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for a unit on food webs?

Start with one card per key term, then add cards for relationships such as predator and prey or producer and consumer. Add more only when you find a concept you keep missing.

What is the best way to study trophic levels?

Draw the food web from memory, then quiz yourself on who eats whom and where energy is lost. Retrieval practice works better than rereading the same notes.

Can DeckOwl make flashcards directly from a video file?

DeckOwl accepts PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes and images, but not video files. Paste a transcript or your typed notes from the video as text to generate cards.

Can I export my cards to Anki?

Yes, export to Anki is included on the Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser, but exports are not included.
