Question cards built from your own material

Most people who look for anki question cards already have the material: lecture slides, a textbook chapter or notes from class. Writing each question by hand often takes longer than the review that follows, so DeckOwl reads your file and drafts question-and-answer cards from it. You check the set, fix anything off, and study.

Works from your files

Use PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or images. Photos of pages are read with text recognition.

Question on the front, answer on the back

Each card asks one thing and gives a short answer, drawn from the material you uploaded.

Export and review

On Plus, export to Anki, CSV, PDF or DOCX, and use spaced repetition to schedule reviews.

How it works

Upload your material

Drop in a PDF, slides, notes or a photo of a textbook page.

Check the cards

Edit any question or answer that is unclear or wrong before you start studying.

Study or export

Practice in the browser on the free plan, or export to Anki on Plus.

Good question cards ask for one fact each. A question like "Which article creates Congress?" is easier to review than "Describe how the federal government is structured." Short answers let you grade yourself quickly and keep the cards useful over time.

Frequently asked questions

How many question cards should I make from one chapter?

Aim for one card per distinct fact, term or rule in the chapter. A dense chapter may need several dozen, while a short reading may need only a handful. Split any card that asks two things at once.

How do I write question cards that stick?

Ask one thing per card, phrase the answer in your own words, and avoid yes or no questions where guessing is easy. Review cards on a spaced schedule rather than cramming them the night before a test.

Can I export these cards to Anki?

Yes, on the Plus plan, which also includes CSV, PDF and DOCX export. The free plan lets you study in the browser with 3 generations per month, but exports are not included.

Do I need a credit card to try it?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card. Students get 40% off with a school email.
