How sharing an Anki deck works

Study groups often want the same cards, so the question of whether you can share Anki decks comes up before every exam. The short answer is yes, as long as the deck is exported from a generator that supports Anki.

  • Start from your own lecture notes or textbook chapter, not a generic deck.
  • Keep each card to one fact so spaced repetition can schedule it well.
  • Review the whole deck together before exams so everyone agrees on the answers.
  • Export to Anki on Plus, then import the file into Anki on each device.

Cards from your material

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages and get flashcards built from what you actually studied.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards come back at the intervals that help you remember them, so review time goes to the facts you are about to forget.

Export to Anki on Plus

Export your generated flashcards to Anki, then pass the file along so classmates can import the same deck.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, slides, notes or an image. No credit card is needed to start on the free plan.

Review the generated cards

Check the flashcards against your lecture or textbook and keep the ones that matter for your course.

Export or study

Study in the browser on the free plan, or upgrade to Plus to export to Anki and share the deck.

DeckOwl creates flashcards from your own material, which keeps the deck tied to the readings and slides your course actually uses. Exporting to Anki is a Plus feature, and the file can then be imported into Anki on any device.

Before sharing, check that every card has one clear fact on the front and a correct answer on the back. A shared deck is only useful if each person can tell what the card is testing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I share my flashcards without paying?

The free plan lets you study flashcards in the browser but does not include exports. Exporting to Anki, PDF, DOCX or CSV requires Plus, which costs $39/year or $7.99/month.

How many flashcards should I make for anatomy?

Start with the key terms from one lecture or chapter and add cards as gaps show up in review. Keep each card to one fact so you can tell quickly whether you know it.

What is the best way to study a shared deck?

Review your own notes first, then use the shared deck to check for gaps. Shared cards work best when everyone has seen the source material, since missing context makes recall harder.

Does DeckOwl work with Anki?

Yes. On Plus you can export generated flashcards to Anki, then import them into Anki on your own device and share the file with others.
