Why build your own Chinese pinyin deck

Shared decks often use a different textbook, a different romanization or a vocabulary list that skips the words in your next quiz. A Chinese Anki deck with pinyin made from your own notes keeps the tones, characters and examples aligned with what you are being tested on.

  • Pinyin with tone marks, not just plain letters
  • Characters and English meanings on the same card
  • Spaced repetition scheduling for tones and characters
  • Exports to Anki on the Plus plan
Example Chinese pinyin flashcards
What are the four tones of Mandarin, plus the neutral tone?First (high level, ā), second (rising, á), third (dipping, ǎ), fourth (falling, à), and neutral (no mark). The neutral tone is short and unstressed.
Where does the tone mark go when a syllable has a, e, or o?On a if it is present, then on e or o. In the combination iu, the mark goes on the second vowel, as in liú.
How is 你好 (hello) pronounced in Mandarin?Ní hǎo. When two third tones come together, the first one changes to a second tone, which is called third tone sandhi.
What is the difference between mā and mǎ?Mā with a first tone means mother, while mǎ with a third tone means horse. Tones change the meaning of the same syllable.
What is the pinyin for 谢谢 (thank you)?Xièxie. The second syllable is neutral tone, so it has no tone mark.

Pinyin on every card

Each vocabulary item can show characters, tone-marked pinyin and the English meaning, so you practice reading and pronunciation together.

Built from your material

Upload PDFs, slides, typed notes or photos of pages, and the flashcards follow the words your course actually uses.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner and easy ones spread out, so tones and characters stick over weeks instead of the night before a quiz.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text file or a photo of a vocabulary list. Text recognition reads the characters from images.

Generate pinyin flashcards

DeckOwl creates cards with characters, pinyin and meaning. Review them in the browser on the free plan.

Study or export to Anki

Study with spaced repetition, or on Plus export to Anki, CSV, PDF or DOCX to keep your deck with you.

Pinyin is worth checking card by card. Tone marks on vowels, third tone sandhi and neutral tones are easy to get wrong when copied from a generic list, so review each generated card against your class materials before you rely on it.

Because the cards come from your own pages, you can add new vocabulary each week by uploading the next lesson. Spaced repetition then schedules the older words alongside the new ones.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write pinyin tone marks on flashcards?

Type the vowel with its tone mark, such as nǐ or mā, or use tone numbers like ni3 and ma1 if your notes already use them. Keep the characters on the front and the pinyin with the English meaning on the back.

Should I learn characters or pinyin first?

Many learners start with pinyin and tones so they can hear and say words, then add characters as they become familiar. Keeping both on each card helps you practice both skills together.

Does the free plan export to Anki?

No. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, while Anki, PDF, DOCX and CSV export are on Plus at $39/year or $7.99/month.

Can I start without a credit card?

Yes, you can start on the free plan with no credit card, and students get 40% off with a school email.
