How to make Chinese number flashcards that actually help

Chinese numbers are a good first set to drill, because counting, prices and phone numbers all depend on them. Start with Chinese number flashcards built from your own list, so the cards match the characters and pinyin your teacher uses.

  • Start with 一 through 十, then the tens such as 二十 and 三十.
  • Make one card for the character, one for the pinyin, and one for the English value when your notes allow it.
  • Add cards for 零 (zero) and for numbers with a zero in the middle, such as 105, which are easy to get wrong.
  • Review new cards daily for a short session rather than one long session each week.
Example Chinese number flashcards
What is 十 (shí)?Ten.
What is 百 (bǎi)?One hundred.
How do you say 20 in Chinese?二十 (èrshí), literally two-ten.
What is 三千 (sān qiān)?Three thousand.
How do you say 15 in Chinese?十五 (shíwǔ), literally ten-five.

Built from your material

Upload a PDF, slides, a DOCX file, plain notes or a photo of a textbook page. Text in photos is read with text recognition.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back more often, and cards you know come back less often, so the numbers stick without daily cramming.

Quizzes and mind maps too

Turn the same number set into multiple choice, true/false or short answer quizzes with explanations, or lay it out as a mind map.

How it works

Study in the browser

Review with spaced repetition. The free plan lets you study in the browser with 3 generations per month.

Good number cards test both directions: show the digit and ask for the Chinese character and pinyin, then show the characters and ask for the value. Start with 1 to 10, then the tens, then hundreds and thousands, since larger numbers are built from the same pieces.

Frequently asked questions

How many Chinese numbers should I learn first?

Start with 1 to 10, then the tens up to 100, because most larger numbers are built from those pieces. Once 十 and the digits are automatic, 11 to 99 and then hundreds become much easier.

Why do Chinese numbers over 10 follow a pattern?

Compound numbers combine digits with place words such as 十 (ten) and 百 (hundred). Once you know 三 and 十, you can read 三十 as thirty without memorizing it as a separate word.

Can I study the flashcards on my phone?

The free plan lets you study in the browser, which works on a phone. Exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki or CSV are part of the paid Plus plan.

Can I export my number flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is included in the Plus plan, which costs $99.90 per year or $9.99 per month. Students get 40% off with a school email, and no credit card is needed to start.
