How to make definition flashcards from your own material

Good definition flashcards pair one term with one answer that a person could recall without looking. That is harder to do by hand than it sounds, because a textbook glossary often mixes key terms with minor details that do not belong on a card.

  • Keep one term per card so each answer can be checked in a glance.
  • Use the wording from your course, since exam questions often follow it.
  • Cut any definition that needs more than two sentences to answer.
  • Review new cards the same day you make them, then let spaced repetition set the pace.
Example biology vocabulary definition flashcards
OsmosisThe movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from a region of lower solute concentration to a region of higher solute concentration.
MitosisA type of cell division that produces two daughter nuclei with the same number and type of chromosomes as the parent cell.
EnzymeA biological catalyst, usually a protein, that speeds up a chemical reaction by lowering its activation energy.
HomeostasisThe maintenance of a stable internal environment, such as body temperature or blood glucose, despite changes outside the body.
AlleleOne of two or more alternative forms of a gene that occupy the same locus on a chromosome.

Term on front, definition on back

Each card pairs one key term with a clear definition taken from your own material, so you test recall instead of recognition.

Spaced repetition scheduling

Cards you miss come back sooner, and the ones you know move to longer intervals, so review time goes to the terms you are still learning.

Works from the files you already have

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or photos of pages. Images are read with text recognition, so a glossary photo can become cards.

How it works

Upload your source

Add a PDF, slide deck, notes file or a photo of a textbook glossary.

Review the generated cards

Check each term and definition against your course material and edit any wording you want to change.

Study on a spaced schedule

Study in the browser on the Free plan, or export to Anki and CSV on Plus, and let the schedule bring back cards you are about to forget.

DeckOwl reads your file, picks out the terms that carry the most meaning, and writes a short definition for each one based on the wording in your source. You can then remove cards that are too broad, split definitions that hold two ideas, and reuse the same set on every review day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between definition flashcards and regular flashcards?

Definition flashcards put a term on the front and its meaning on the back, which suits vocabulary-heavy courses. DeckOwl builds them from your own readings so the definitions match your course wording.

How many definition flashcards should I make for one chapter?

Most chapters work well with 20 to 40 cards, one for each key term, so every card tests a single idea. If a definition needs more than two sentences to answer, split it into smaller cards.

Can I export the flashcards to Anki or a CSV file?

Yes, but export is a paid feature. The Free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, while Plus adds unlimited generations and PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.

Does DeckOwl read photos of textbook pages?

Yes, images are read with text recognition, so a photo of a glossary page can become definition flashcards. Check the generated cards against the original page, since recognition can miss small print.
