Why build your own vocabulary deck

Duolingo introduces words in short bursts, so many learners end up with a long list they rarely revisit. Duolingo vocabulary flashcards built from your own lessons keep those words in rotation on a spacing schedule, which is what moves them into long-term memory.

  • Screenshot word banks and read them with text recognition
  • Front shows the target word, back shows its meaning and an example
  • Spaced repetition brings back the words you find hard
  • Export to Anki or CSV on the Plus plan if you study elsewhere
Example Spanish vocabulary flashcards
la bibliotecalibrary (feminine noun, so use la)
¿Dónde está el baño?Where is the bathroom? (estar is used for location)
der Bahnhoftrain station (masculine in German, so der)
je voudraisI would like, a polite form for ordering or asking (from vouloir)
grazie millethank you very much (grazie alone means thank you)

Read screenshots

Photos and screenshots of word banks are read with text recognition, so you do not have to retype anything.

Front and back cards

The front shows the target word or phrase, and the back shows its meaning, with context where it helps.

Spaced repetition

Cards you struggle with return more often, and the ones you know move further apart.

How it works

Add your words

Upload a PDF, a screenshot, a DOCX or pasted notes that contain your Duolingo vocabulary.

Generate cards

DeckOwl creates flashcards from the text it finds, ready to review in your browser.

Study on a schedule

Review a short set each day and let spaced repetition decide what comes back next.

Upload a screenshot of a word bank, a typed list or notes from a lesson. DeckOwl reads the text, pulls out the terms and generates cards you can study in the browser on the free plan.

Add a short phrase next to each word so gender, verb endings and context stick. Review a small batch every day instead of cramming the night before a test.

Frequently asked questions

How many new words should I learn each day?

Many learners do well with 10 to 20 new words a day, reviewed on a spacing schedule instead of all at once. Consistency over several weeks matters more than the daily count.

Should I memorize single words or whole phrases?

Phrases usually work better for language vocabulary because they show gender, verb forms and how the word is used. Start with the word, then add one short example sentence to its card.

Can I export my vocabulary flashcards to Anki?

Yes, but export is a paid feature. The Plus plan costs $39 per year or $7.99 per month and includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export.

Is there a free way to try DeckOwl first?

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, and no credit card is needed to start. Students with a school email get 40 percent off paid plans.
