Running a live quiz round from your own material

The strongest prep for any gimkit play live round starts with your own slides, because generic questions rarely match what students were just taught.

  • Write questions that test one fact or idea each, with a clear correct answer.
  • Keep a round to 10 to 15 questions so it finishes within one class period.
  • Use the explanation after each answer to correct misconceptions out loud.
  • Reuse the same set as flashcards or a printed review sheet later in the week.
Example live review questions for a biology unit
Which organelle produces most of a cell's ATP?Mitochondria. Their electron transport chain drives most ATP synthesis during aerobic respiration.
True or false: osmosis moves water from the side with lower solute concentration to the side with higher solute concentration.True. Water moves toward the side with more solute, which has less free water, until the gradient balances.
What does DNA polymerase add to a growing strand during replication?Complementary nucleotides to the 3' end, so the new strand extends in the 5' to 3' direction.
Which phase of mitosis lines chromosomes up along the cell's equator?Metaphase. Spindle fibers attach to kinetochores and chromosomes align at the metaphase plate.
What do ATP and NADPH from the light reactions power in the Calvin cycle? The reduction of carbon dioxide into G3P, which is then used to build sugar.

Questions from your own material

Upload PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or a photo of a page. Questions come from what your class actually covered.

Explanations for every answer

Each question includes an explanation, so students learn from misses right after the round ends.

Export for your class platform

Moodle XML and QTI 2.1 export are available on the Pro plan for use in your learning management system.

How it works

Upload your review material

Add a PDF, slide deck, document, set of notes or a photo of a textbook page.

Choose question types and count

Pick multiple choice, true/false or short answer, then set how many questions the round needs.

Run the round your way

Project the questions in class, or print them, and use the explanations to talk through each answer.

DeckOwl reads PDFs, DOCX and PPTX files, plain notes and photos of pages, then drafts multiple-choice, true/false and short-answer questions with explanations. Teachers and students can review each question before it goes into a round.

DeckOwl does not host a live game room where students join with a code. Use the generated set in whatever live format your class already runs, and keep rounds short enough to finish in one period.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions should a live review round include?

Around 10 to 15 questions usually fits one class period and covers the main ideas without dragging. If you have more material, run a second round instead of a longer one.

What makes a good question for a live quiz round?

Each question should test one fact or idea, have one clearly correct answer and plausible wrong options. Short explanations help students learn from the misses right after the round.

Does DeckOwl host live games that students join with a code?

No. DeckOwl generates quizzes, flashcards and mind maps from your material and runs them in the browser, but it does not host a live game room.

Which plan lets me export questions to Moodle or QTI?

Moodle XML and QTI 2.1 export are on the Pro plan at $14.99/month. PDF and DOCX export are included in Plus at $99.90/year or $9.99/month, and students get 40% off with a school email.
