How flashcards for lessons work

Most students keep lesson material scattered across slide decks, handouts and notebook photos, which makes review slow. Making flashcards for lessons by hand takes time that could go to actually learning the content.

  • Use the lesson's own slides, notes or handouts as the source
  • Review in the browser on the free plan with 3 generations per month
  • Export to Anki or CSV on Plus, which costs $39/year or $7.99/month
  • Students get 40% off with a school email
Example biology flashcards for cell structure lessons
What is the function of the mitochondrion? It produces most of the cell's ATP through cellular respiration.
What is the role of the ribosome? It synthesizes proteins by translating messenger RNA into a chain of amino acids.
What does the cell membrane do?It controls what enters and leaves the cell, using a selectively permeable phospholipid bilayer.
What is the nucleus's main job?It stores the cell's DNA and controls gene expression, which regulates the cell's activity.
How does the Golgi apparatus function? It modifies, sorts and packages proteins and lipids for transport to their destinations.

Works with your own files

Upload PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or images. Photos of pages are read with text recognition.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards come back at the intervals that suit how well you know them, so you spend time on what you miss.

Quizzes and mind maps too

Turn the same lesson into multiple choice, true or false and short answer questions with explanations, or a mind map of main ideas.

How it works

Upload your lesson

Add the slides, notes, PDF or a photo of the page you want to study.

Generate flashcards

DeckOwl reads the material and writes question and answer cards from it.

Study on a schedule

Review the cards in your browser on the spaced repetition schedule and repeat the ones you miss.

Upload the files you already have and DeckOwl pulls out the key terms, definitions and facts as question and answer cards. You can check the cards before you study, so you can remove anything that is off-topic or add a card of your own.

Spaced repetition then spreads your reviews across the week. Cards you find hard come back sooner, and cards you know well appear less often.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for one lesson?

Aim for one card per key term, definition or fact the lesson depends on, which often means 15 to 40 cards for a typical session. Fewer, clearer cards are easier to keep up with than long cards with several facts packed together.

How often should I review lesson flashcards?

Review new cards the same day you learn them, then let spaced repetition space out the next reviews. Short sessions of 10 to 15 minutes a few times a week tend to work better than one long cram session.

Can I export my flashcards?

Exports are a paid feature. Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and the free plan lets you study in the browser.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card and upgrade later if you want unlimited generations or exports.
