Why custom beats printable sets

Printable sets are a fine starting point, but flash cards NZ students really need are the ones built from their own course material.

  • Cards built from your own lecture slides and readings
  • Photos of printed pages are read with text recognition
  • Spaced repetition schedules reviews around what you forget
  • Free plan includes 3 generations per month with no credit card
Example cell division flashcards: mitosis and meiosis
How many daughter cells does mitosis produce? Two genetically identical diploid daughter cells.
How many daughter cells does meiosis produce?Four genetically distinct haploid cells.
What is crossing over and when does it occur?Exchange of DNA segments between homologous chromosomes during prophase I of meiosis, which creates new allele combinations.
What happens to sister chromatids during anaphase of mitosis? They separate and move to opposite poles of the cell.
Why is meiosis I called the reduction division?Homologous pairs separate, so each daughter cell has half the chromosome number of the parent cell.

Upload PDFs, DOCX, PPTX, plain notes or photos of pages. Images are read with text recognition.

Spaced repetition

Cards return at the right time, so you review what you are about to forget.

Study in the browser

The free plan lets you study in the browser. Exports are included on Plus.

How it works

Add your material

Upload a PDF, slides, a DOCX file, plain notes or a photo of a page.

Generate cards

DeckOwl drafts flashcards from your own content.

Review with spacing

Study in the browser and let spaced repetition schedule your reviews.

Generic printables cover a topic broadly, while your lecturer tests the slides and readings you were assigned. Uploading those gives you cards that match what will be assessed.

The free plan includes 3 generations per month and needs no credit card to start. Plus adds unlimited generations along with Anki and CSV export.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for mitosis and meiosis?

Aim for one card per distinct stage, event or term, such as each phase of mitosis and the difference between meiosis I and II. Most students find 40 to 80 cards enough for a unit, and you can add more as your notes grow.

What is the main difference between mitosis and meiosis?

Mitosis produces two genetically identical diploid cells and is used for growth and repair. Meiosis produces four genetically distinct haploid cells and is used to make gametes, with crossing over and reduction division in its first stage.

Can I export my flashcards to Anki or as a PDF?

Yes, but exports are paid features. Plus includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, while the free plan lets you study in the browser only.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card, which includes 3 generations per month. Students can also get 40% off with a school email.
