Why make your own flash cards

Pre-printed flash cards from a stationery shop cover generic content, so they rarely match the exact lecture, chapter or slide deck you need to learn. DeckOwl works the other way around: upload your own PDF, DOCX, PPTX, notes or a photo of a page, and it generates flash cards from that material.

Works from PDFs, PPTX slides, DOCX files and plain notes
Photos of textbook pages are read with text recognition
Spaced repetition brings back the cards you are most likely to forget
Free plan includes 3 generations per month with no credit card needed

What does the Golgi apparatus do?It modifies, sorts and packages proteins and lipids for transport.

What role does the cell membrane play?It is a selectively permeable barrier that controls what enters and leaves the cell.

Built from your material

Upload PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text or images, and get cards drawn from your own course content.

Spaced repetition

Cards you know are shown less often, and shaky ones come back sooner, so study time goes where it helps.

Study anywhere

Review flash cards in the browser on the free plan, and export to Anki or CSV when you upgrade to Plus.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, slide deck, Word file, pasted notes or a photo of a textbook page.

Generate your cards

DeckOwl reads the text and writes flash cards from the key terms, processes and facts it finds.

Review on a schedule

Rate each card as you study, and the spaced repetition schedule decides when it shows up next.

Each card goes into a spaced repetition schedule, so the ones you already know fade into longer review gaps while shaky ones return sooner. Free accounts get 3 generations per month and can study in the browser. Plus adds unlimited generations and export to Anki or CSV.

Frequently asked questions

How many flash cards should I make for a biology unit?

Aim for one idea per card, focusing on the terms, processes and cause-and-effect points your instructor emphasizes rather than copying whole paragraphs. Start with the headings and bold terms in your notes, then add cards for anything you missed on a practice quiz.

What is the best way to study flash cards?

Say the answer aloud before flipping each card, and rate it honestly so the schedule can adjust. Short daily sessions work better than one long cram session before an exam.

Can I export my flash cards to Anki?

Export to Anki is available on the Plus plan, which costs $39 per year or $7.99 per month. The free plan lets you study flash cards in the browser without exports.

Do I need a credit card to try DeckOwl?

No, you can start on the free plan without a credit card. Students also get 40% off with a school email.
