How the flashcards method works

Most students start with the flashcards method by writing questions on one side of an index card and answers on the other. The method works because pulling an answer out of memory strengthens it far more than reading the same answer again.

  • Write one fact or question per card so misses are easy to diagnose.
  • Answer from memory before you flip the card, even if you feel unsure.
  • Review new cards the same day and missed cards again within a day or two.
  • Shuffle the deck so you are not recalling items in the order you learned them.
Example cards that explain the flashcards method
What is spaced repetition?Reviewing material at increasing intervals, so each review happens just before you would forget it.
What is active recall?Retrieving an answer from memory before checking it, which strengthens the memory more than rereading does.
What is the Leitner system?A box-based method where correct cards move to boxes reviewed less often and missed cards return to the first box.
Why do flashcards beat rereading notes? They force retrieval practice, and the effort of recalling an answer builds stronger memory than seeing it again.
How many facts should one flashcard hold? One fact or question, so a missed answer shows exactly which idea needs more review.

Cards from your own material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes or a photo of a page and get flashcards built from that content.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards you know come back less often and cards you miss come back sooner, so review time goes to what you need.

How it works

Add your notes

Upload a file or a photo of your pages. Text recognition reads the content so nothing has to be retyped.

Review the cards

Answer each card from memory before flipping it. Honest recall is the point of the method.

Let the schedule run

Rate each card as easy, hard or missed and DeckOwl spaces the next review based on how you did.

The second half of the method is timing. Reviewing a card just before you would forget it keeps the memory alive with less total effort than cramming, which is why spaced repetition is the part most people skip when they make cards by hand.

Making good cards is the slow part. Each card should hold one fact or question so that a missed answer points to exactly what needs more practice.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should I make for one study session?

Twenty to forty cards is a manageable session for most people, and you can add more as the deck grows. Fewer, well-made cards usually beat a long deck you never finish.

What is the difference between active recall and rereading?

Active recall means pulling an answer from memory and checking it afterward, while rereading only shows you the information again. Recall practice builds stronger memory, which is why flashcards are built around it.

Can I export my flashcards to Anki?

Yes, but export is a paid feature. The Plus plan includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and the free plan lets you study in the browser.

Does DeckOwl work from photos of my notes?

Yes. Photos of pages are read with text recognition, so you can upload a picture and generate flashcards from it.
