Printable Chinese flashcards built from your own material

Most free printable Chinese flashcards online are generic word lists, and they rarely match the characters your teacher used this week. DeckOwl works the other way: you upload your own vocabulary sheet, lesson slides or a photo of a textbook page, and it builds the cards from that material.

  • Cards built from your own vocabulary lists and lesson slides
  • Character, pinyin and meaning on either side of each card
  • Spaced repetition that brings back the words you miss
  • PDF export for printing on Plus; browser study on the free plan
Example Chinese flashcards for beginners

Characters, pinyin and meaning

Put the character, pinyin or English on either side of each card so you practice recognizing and recalling words.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back more often, and the ones you know appear less, so review time goes to the words that need it.

Print with PDF export

Export your set to PDF on Plus and print it for paper practice, or study in the browser on the free plan.

How it works

Upload your material

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text notes, or a photo of a page. Photos are read with text recognition.

Check the generated cards

Review the cards against your class material and edit any character or translation that looks wrong.

Study or print

Study in the browser with spaced repetition, or export to PDF on Plus to print a paper set.

If you need paper copies, PDF export is available on Plus, so you can print the set. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and browser study, which is enough to test a set before you decide. Each card can show the character, pinyin or meaning on either side, so you practice both reading and recall.

Frequently asked questions

How should I study Chinese characters with flashcards?

Put the character on the front and the pinyin and meaning on the back, then also make reverse cards so you can recall the character from its meaning. Review daily in short sessions, since spaced repetition works best with regular practice.

Should flashcards show pinyin or characters first?

Use both directions. Characters-to-meaning builds reading skill, and meaning-to-character builds writing and recall, which are harder and need more practice.

Can I print my flashcards for free?

Printing needs a PDF export, which is a Plus feature at $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and lets you study in the browser without exports.

Can DeckOwl read photos of Chinese textbook pages?

Yes, photos of pages are read with text recognition, and the cards are generated from the recognized text. Check the output against the page before you study, since recognition can miss characters in poor photos.
