Why pronunciation belongs on the card

A French word on its own card teaches spelling, but the pronunciation beside it is what lets you say it out loud. Good French flashcards with pronunciation put the sound next to the meaning, so you practice both on the same card.

  • Pair each French word with its meaning and a pronunciation note on the back.
  • Start with the vocabulary from one lesson rather than a whole textbook.
  • Say the word aloud before checking the answer, then compare against the note.
  • Review the weak cards more often than the ones you already know well.
Example French pronunciation flashcards
bonjourhello, good day · /bɔ̃.ʒuʁ/ (bohn-ZHOOR)
mercithank you · /mɛʁ.si/ (mehr-SEE), with the final r rolled lightly or softened
je voudraisI would like · /ʒə vu.dʁɛ/ (zhuh voo-DREH), the -ais ending is pronounced /ɛ/
grenouillefrog · /ɡʁə.nuj/ (gruh-NOOY), the -ouille ending makes a /uj/ sound
eauwater · /o/ (oh), the spelling eau, au and o all share this sound

Works from your own material

Upload PDFs, DOCX or PPTX files, plain text notes, or photos of pages. Text recognition reads the photos, so a handwritten or printed vocab sheet can become a deck.

Spaced repetition

Cards come back at the intervals where you are most likely to forget them, so French words move from recognition to recall.

Study in the browser

The free plan includes 3 generations a month and studying in the browser. Paid plans add exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV.

How it works

Upload your French material

Add the vocab list, textbook pages or lesson slides that already include the words and any pronunciation guides.

Review the generated cards

Check each front and back. Keep the pronunciation notes that matter to you and edit anything that looks off.

Study with spaced repetition

Review the deck in your browser every day. Cards you miss return sooner, and cards you know drop out of rotation.

DeckOwl reads your own files, so the cards follow your course. If your teacher's list includes IPA symbols or simple respellings, keep them in the source and review them alongside the English meaning. Work through the deck in short sessions, saying each word before you flip the card.

Frequently asked questions

How should I practice French pronunciation with flashcards?

Say the word aloud before you flip the card, then compare your version with the pronunciation note. Focus on sounds that differ from English, such as the French u in rue and the nasal vowels in bonjour.

How many French words should I put in one deck?

Most learners do better with 20 to 40 new words per session than with a long list at once. Spaced repetition then brings each card back at the right time.

Does DeckOwl create audio for the words?

DeckOwl generates flashcards from your uploaded material and text recognition on photos. Pronunciation shows up as written notes or symbols that appear in your source, so it is not a built-in audio feature.

Is exporting French flashcards free?

The free plan lets you study in the browser with 3 generations a month but does not include exports. Plus and Pro include exports to PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV, and students get 40% off with a school email.
