Why a Canvas quiz misses the gradebook

When a Canvas quiz is not showing in the gradebook, the cause is almost always a setting inside Canvas rather than the questions themselves. An unpublished quiz does not post a score, a Practice Quiz type is never graded, and manual posting can hide grades until someone releases them.

  • Confirm the quiz is published, since unpublished quizzes do not appear in the gradebook.
  • Check that the quiz type is Graded Quiz, not Practice Quiz or Ungraded Survey.
  • Look at the gradebook filters and hidden columns, and confirm the assignment group is weighted above zero.
  • If grades are held, review the Post Policies setting for manual posting before assuming the score is lost.
Example Canvas gradebook troubleshooting questions
Why might a published Canvas quiz still be missing from the gradebook? The quiz type may be set to Practice Quiz or Ungraded Survey, which Canvas does not record as a graded assignment.
What does manual posting do to quiz scores in Canvas? It holds grades back from students until someone posts them, so scores can look missing even when they have been recorded.
Why can a quiz be visible but still missing from the gradebook view?Gradebook filters, hidden columns or a grading period setting can exclude it, so check the view options before assuming the grade is gone.
What happens if a Canvas assignment group has a weight of zero? Its assignments still exist, but they do not contribute to the final grade, so the quiz may look absent from the calculated total.
How can you check whether a Canvas quiz is set to count toward grades?Open the quiz settings and review the quiz type and assignment group, since those determine whether the score is included in the gradebook.

Questions from your own material

Upload a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, text notes or a photo of a page and get multiple-choice, true/false or open questions.

Explanations for every answer

Each question includes a short explanation so you can see why the correct answer is right, not just which one it is.

Export for Canvas

Pro includes QTI 2.1 export, which is the format Canvas uses for quiz import. PDF and DOCX exports are on Plus.

How it works

Upload your study material

Add the PDF, slides or notes your quiz should cover. Photos of printed pages are read with text recognition.

Choose question types

Pick multiple choice, true/false or open questions, then generate the set and review it before you use it.

Study in the browser or export

Free plan users can practice in the browser. Plus and Pro users can export to PDF, DOCX or, on Pro, QTI 2.1.

DeckOwl builds study quizzes from your own notes and slides, which is useful for practice even when a graded Canvas quiz has a setup problem. Once the Canvas settings are sorted out, you can generate new questions from the same material and check them against your course content.

Frequently asked questions

Why does an unpublished Canvas quiz not appear in the gradebook?

Canvas does not record or display scores for quizzes that are unpublished, because students cannot take them yet. Publish the quiz, then check whether any grades need to be posted manually.

Do practice quizzes in Canvas count toward the gradebook?

No. A Practice Quiz type is designed for ungraded self-checks, so its results do not appear as gradebook entries. Change the quiz type to Graded Quiz if it should count.

Can DeckOwl fix my Canvas gradebook?

No. DeckOwl does not connect to Canvas or read your gradebook, so grade and visibility problems have to be checked inside your course settings.

Which DeckOwl plan lets me export quizzes for Canvas?

QTI 2.1 export is included on Pro at $14.99 per month. Plus, at $99.90 per year or $9.99 per month, includes PDF and DOCX exports and is 40% off with a school email.
