How to build Hindi vocabulary flashcards that stick

Most Hindi vocabulary is learned through repetition, and the words that stick are the ones you see again at the right time. Good hindi vocabulary flashcards pair each word with its meaning and, when useful, its gender and a short example phrase, so you learn how the word is used and not just what it means.

  • Use your own lesson files so the deck follows your course order.
  • Add the Devanagari word, romanization and English meaning when your teacher expects all three.
  • Review new cards daily and let older cards space out as you get them right.
  • Export to Anki or CSV on a paid plan if you want to keep a copy outside the app.

Built from your material

Flashcards come from the words in your own lesson files, so your deck matches what your teacher covers.

Spaced repetition

Words you miss come back sooner, and words you know fade to longer gaps, so less time goes to review.

Script and meaning on each card

Keep the Devanagari word on one side and the English meaning on the other, or add romanization for pronunciation.

How it works

Upload your notes

Add a PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text file or a photo of a vocabulary page.

Review the generated cards

Check the Hindi words and meanings, then remove or edit any card that needs fixing.

Study on a spaced schedule

Open the deck in your browser each day and rate how well you knew each word.

Start with the words from your current unit rather than a long list from the internet. Five to ten new words a day, reviewed on a spaced schedule, usually beats one long cramming session. Write the Devanagari form yourself at least once to build reading skill.

DeckOwl reads your own files and proposes cards for the terms it finds. You stay in control: edit the translations, delete anything you do not need, and add your own examples before you study.

Frequently asked questions

How many Hindi words should I learn each day?

Most learners do well with 5 to 10 new words a day, reviewed in short sessions. Spaced review matters more than the number of new words you add.

Should my flashcards use Devanagari or romanization?

Use Devanagari if you are learning to read, since writing the script builds recognition. Add romanization at first if you mainly need pronunciation, then drop it as you get comfortable.

Can I export my Hindi flashcards to Anki?

Yes, but exports are a paid feature. The Plus plan includes PDF, DOCX, Anki and CSV export, and it is $39 per year or $7.99 per month.

Is there a free plan I can try first?

Yes. The free plan includes 3 generations per month and studying in the browser, with no exports. You do not need a credit card to start.
