From spreadsheet rows to an Anki deck

Your Excel sheet may already hold question-and-answer pairs, so the fastest route to how to make an Anki deck from Excel is to move those pairs into text first. DeckOwl does not read .xlsx files directly; it takes PDF, DOCX, PPTX, plain text and images.

  • Put one question and one answer on each line, so the AI can pair them cleanly.
  • Remove merged cells and blank rows before you copy, which keeps the text readable.
  • Split large sheets into smaller sections by topic so each batch is easier to review.
  • Check the generated cards against the sheet before you export to Anki.
Example Excel formulas for an Anki deck
What does =SUM(B2:B10) return? The total of the values in cells B2 through B10. SUM adds a range in one step instead of typing every cell.
What does the $ sign do in =$A$1?It locks the reference to cell A1 so it stays fixed when the formula is copied to other cells.
What does =IF(C2>=50,'Pass','Fail') return when C2 is 42?'Fail'. IF tests the condition and returns the first value when it is true, otherwise the second.
What does the FALSE in the fourth argument of VLOOKUP do?It requires an exact match. Leaving it out or setting TRUE allows an approximate match, which can return wrong results on unsorted data.
What is a PivotTable used for?Summarizing large data sets by grouping and aggregating rows, such as totals by region, without writing a separate formula for each group.

Reads your sheet as text

Paste cells into a plain text file or upload a screenshot of a short table, and the content is read for flashcard generation.

Spaced repetition built in

Cards are scheduled for review at growing intervals, so Excel formulas stick past the night before a quiz.

Export to Anki

The Plus plan exports your deck to Anki, along with PDF, DOCX and CSV, so you can keep studying wherever Anki runs.

How it works

Save or copy your sheet

Copy the question and answer columns into a plain text file with one pair per line, or take a clear photo of the table.

Upload and generate

Upload the file to DeckOwl and generate flashcards from your own material.

Export to Anki

Review the cards, then export to Anki on a Plus plan at $39/year or $7.99/month.

Paste each pair on its own line, separated by a tab or the word Answer, then upload the file. The AI turns your rows into flashcards with spaced repetition, and you can check and edit them before studying. Screenshots work too, though a clear photo of a short table reads better than a wide one with tiny text.

Exporting to Anki is a paid feature. The free plan lets you study in the browser with three generations a month, while Plus adds unlimited generations and Anki export.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to learn Excel formulas with flashcards?

Put one function on each card: the front shows a task such as looking up a value, and the back shows the formula and a short example. Review cards daily so the syntax becomes automatic.

Should I memorize every Excel shortcut or only the ones I use?

Focus first on the functions and shortcuts you use weekly, such as SUM, IF and Ctrl+Enter, before learning rarer ones. Frequent recall practice works better than one long cram session.

Can I export my DeckOwl deck to Anki?

Yes, but export is a paid feature on the Plus plan, at $39/year or $7.99/month. The free plan lets you study in the browser with three generations per month.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the free plan without a credit card, and students get 40% off with a school email.
