Why the text route works best

The quickest way to make an Anki deck from Google Sheets is to move the data into a format DeckOwl can read, since it accepts text, notes, PDFs, slides and images rather than spreadsheet files. Sheets with a term column and a definition column give the generator clean material to turn into front and back cards.

  • Keep one term and its definition on each row to make cleaner cards.
  • Remove blank rows and merged cells before you export the sheet.
  • Check that formulas show their results as text, not just the formula text.
  • Review generated cards once before exporting so the Anki deck starts clean.
Example Google Sheets function flashcards
What does ARRAYFORMULA do in Google Sheets? It makes a formula apply to an entire range of cells at once instead of filling each cell one at a time.
What does =VLOOKUP(value, range, col, FALSE) return? It searches the first column of range for value and returns the match from column col, with FALSE requiring an exact match.
What does =COUNTIF(range, criteria) return? It returns the number of cells in range that meet criteria, which is useful for tallying sheet entries.
What does =FILTER(range, condition) do?It returns only the rows of range where condition is TRUE, as a dynamic result that updates when the data changes.
How do you copy a formula down a column in Google Sheets?Drag the fill handle at the bottom-right corner of the cell, or double-click it to fill down next to a column of data.

Start from your own sheet data

Download the sheet as CSV, which is plain text, or paste the cells into a text file. DeckOwl reads plain text and notes directly.

Flashcards with spaced repetition

The generator turns your terms and definitions into question-and-answer cards, and spaced repetition schedules reviews so weak cards come back sooner.

Export to Anki on Plus

Plus includes Anki export along with PDF, DOCX and CSV export. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.

How it works

Export your sheet as text

In Google Sheets, choose File, then Download, then Comma-separated values, or copy the cells into a .txt file.

Upload and generate

Upload the file to DeckOwl and generate flashcards. Free accounts get 3 generations per month, and you do not need a credit card to start.

Review and export to Anki

Check the cards, fix any odd pairings, then export to Anki on a Plus plan to study the deck on any device.

Before you generate, tidy the sheet: remove blank rows, keep one concept per row, and add a header line that names the topic so the cards stay grouped. After generating, read through the cards and delete any that repeat or lack context, because a short, specific front works better in spaced repetition than a long, crowded one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my Google Sheets data into DeckOwl?

Download the sheet as CSV from the File menu, or copy the cells into a plain text file, then upload that file. Plain text and notes are accepted directly.

What should each flashcard front and back contain?

The front should be one clear question or term, and the back should be the single answer or definition. Short, specific pairs are easier to recall than long paragraphs.

Can I export the flashcards to Anki?

Yes, Anki export is a paid feature on the Plus plan, which costs $99.90 per year or $9.99 per month. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.
