What makes a good preschool flashcard

Learning how to make flash cards for preschoolers is mostly a matter of restraint. A young child can hold one idea at a time, so each card should show a single letter, number, color or word with one clear picture beside it. Cards with paragraphs or several questions on the back lose a four-year-old quickly.

  • One skill per set: letters, numbers, colors or sight words, not all at once
  • One picture or word per card, large and easy to read
  • Say the answer aloud before flipping, so the child practices speaking it
  • Swap out cards the child already knows for new ones every week or so
Example preschool letter and number flashcards
Which letter makes the sound /b/ as in ball?B. Say the sound, then the word, and point to the letter.
How many fingers are on one hand?Five. Count them aloud while holding up each finger.
What color do you get when you mix red and yellow?Orange. Mixing two primary colors makes a secondary color.
Which shape has three straight sides?Triangle. Count the corners to check: three corners, three sides.
What sound does the letter S make?/s/, like a snake hissing. Pair the sound with a picture of a sun.

Reads your source

Upload a PDF, slides, notes or a photo of a lesson sheet. Text recognition picks up the words so you can check them.

Spaced repetition

Cards you miss come back sooner, so letters and numbers that are still shaky get more review than the ones that stick.

Export when you need it

Plus adds PDF export for printing and Anki export for practice on a tablet. The free plan studies in the browser.

How it works

Pick one skill

Choose letters, numbers, colors or sight words so each set teaches one thing.

Write or upload the list

Type the list or upload your lesson sheet, with one idea per line.

Review and print

Check that each card has one clear picture or word, then study it in the browser or export it.

Start with the letters, words or numbers you already teach at home or in class. Paste them into DeckOwl as a plain list, or upload a photo of a worksheet and text recognition will pull out the items. Then review the cards yourself, because you know which sounds or names a child still mixes up.

Keep sessions short and repeat the same small set for a few days before adding new cards. Spaced repetition handles timing for older learners, but with preschoolers a parent or teacher usually decides when a card has been mastered.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards should a preschooler practice at once?

A small set works better than a long pile. Introduce only a handful of new cards at a time so the child can succeed before adding more.

Should flashcards for preschoolers have pictures or only words?

Pictures help most at this age, especially for letters and first words. Pair each word with one simple image that matches it.

Can I export preschool flashcards to print?

PDF export is included in the Plus plan at $39 per year or $7.99 per month. The free plan lets you study in the browser without exports.

Does DeckOwl work from a photo of a worksheet?

Yes. You can upload images of pages, and text recognition reads the words so you can review them before studying.
