Making multiplication flashcards that stick

Good multiplication flashcards start with the facts a student is actually missing, not a full grid of every product from 0 to 12. Writing them by hand works, but it takes time, and the cards are often out of date by the time the next unit starts.

  • Start with the tables your class is working on this week.
  • Keep daily sessions to about 10 minutes.
  • Write the answer as a full equation, such as 7 × 8 = 56.
  • Review missed facts more often than the ones you already know.
Example multiplication flashcards for grades 3 to 5
What is 7 × 8?56. Check it by taking 7 × 7 = 49 and adding one more group of 7.
What is 6 × 9, and how can you check it?54. The digits of any multiple of 9 add up to 9, and 5 + 4 = 9.
Why does 3 × 4 equal 4 × 3?12 both ways. Multiplication is commutative, so 3 groups of 4 and 4 groups of 3 contain the same total.
What is 12 × 11?132. Write the first digit 1, then the sum of the digits 1 + 2 = 3, then the last digit 2.
What is 25 × 4?100. Four groups of 25 make one hundred.

Built from your material

Upload a PDF, slides, a DOCX, plain notes or a photo of a worksheet. Your flashcards match the facts your teacher actually assigned.

Spaced repetition

Facts you miss come back sooner, and facts you know fade into longer gaps, so practice time goes to the times tables that need it.

Study in the browser

The Free plan lets you study multiplication flashcards on any device with a browser, with 3 generations per month and no credit card needed.

How it works

Add your source

Upload a worksheet, a photo of a times table chart, or type in the facts you are practicing.

Generate the cards

DeckOwl reads the material and writes one question on the front and one answer on the back for each fact.

Review on a schedule

Study a short session each day. Missed facts return sooner until they become automatic.

DeckOwl turns your own notes, worksheets or slides into a flashcard set. You review the cards in short daily sessions, and spaced repetition brings back the facts that give the most trouble. Printing and exporting cards is a paid feature, so check the plan you need before you start.

Frequently asked questions

What multiplication facts should a flashcard set include?

Start with the tables your class is covering, usually the 2s through 12s, and focus on the facts you miss most. Add new facts once the current ones come back easily.

How often should a student practice multiplication flashcards?

Short daily sessions of about 10 minutes work better than one long session. Spaced review keeps older facts from fading between practice days.

Can I print or export my multiplication flashcards?

Printing is possible through PDF export, which is part of the Plus plan along with DOCX, Anki and CSV export. The Free plan lets you study the cards in the browser.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can start on the Free plan without a credit card, and students with a school email get 40% off Plus.
